Not My Grandma's Crumb Cake

I must insist that this is not

my Grandma's Crumb Cake recipe

My love for crumb cake perhaps is found in my genetic makeup. Mix one part Italian with one park New Yorker and you get me a die hard lover of dense crumbs and a little bit of cake.

My Grandma Pellegrino had a tried and true simple recipe that I share above. While she baked with great gusto for any Catholic holiday the other days she still provided something sweet, lest I never fade away and starve to death. Crumb cake was a staple in her house. Perhaps she did it for me? She was diabetic, so one doesn't really know. All of that to say my Grandma trusted her cake batter to Duncan Hines. Not Betty Crocker, Not Pillsbury, Duncan Hines. The crumbs were all her own.

As I got older and began to sample this treat at local bakeries I discovered a crumb dense cake at my favorite local bakery Create-a-cake in Port Jefferson NY.

When my family moved to North Carolina I suffered through crumb cake withdrawal. I still had Grandma's trusted recipe in my pocket so I forged forward changing up the crumb recipe to make it my own.

Suddenly I found that "Make Crumb Cake" was repeatedly on my Trinity Commercial Cleaning Task task list (thank you Brian), along with invitations to visit provided I bring a crumb cake.

Don't feel bad for me, I am happy to bring a little bit of my beloved Grandma where ever I go.

In my quest for the perfect crumb, I stumbled on a recipe that was perfected by Cook’s Illustrated. It is super easy and made me step out of my box cake into a "from scratch recipe". I still resort back from time to time but this recipe is fantastic and I’m so excited to share it with you today! No more searching Mooresville bakeries, we have you covered. Is there such a thing as TOO MANY CRUMBS?

HOW TO MAKE CRUMB CAKE

There’s no big secret to making a great crumb cake wether using a box cake or from scratch.

But, there’s a little trick in how to create the perfect crumb topping.

To make this cake, you’ll start by making the crumb topping. Once you mix the crumb topping together, it’s going to look a bit dry. This is how it should look so trust the process. If you add more butter it will lend to crisper crumbs. Put the butter down!

Then you’ll mix up the batter of butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla, cake flour, salt, baking soda, and liquid buttermilk. The cake flour is necessary here instead of all-purpose flour to make the cake super soft and tender.

Once you’ve got the batter in the baking pan, you’ll start to crumble the crumb mixture on top. Gradually work your way around the edges and make your way to finish with the last of the crumbs in the center. THIS IS THE TRICK!

This trick will prevent the heavy crumbs from sinking into the light cake when the cake bakes. It will also ensure that the crumbs are evenly distributed across the top of the cake.

It works EVERY time!!

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE CRUMB TOPPING:

⅓ cup granulated sugar (2 ⅔ oz)
⅓ cup dark brown sugar (2 ⅔ oz)
¾ tsp ground cinnamon
⅛ tsp table salt
8 tbsp unsalted butter (1 stick or 4 oz), melted and still warm
1 ¾ cups cake flour (7 oz) (see Note #1 below)

FOR THE CAKE:

1 ¼ cups cake flour (5 oz)
½ cup granulated sugar (3 ½ oz)
¼ tsp baking soda
¼ tsp table salt
6 tbsp unsalted butter (¾ stick or 3 oz), cut into 6 pieces, softened but still cool
1 large egg
1 large egg yolk
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
⅓ cup liquid buttermilk (not dried buttermilk powder)
Confectioners’ sugar for dusting

INSTRUCTIONS

To make the topping: Whisk sugars, cinnamon, salt, and butter in medium bowl to combine. Add flour and stir with rubber spatula or wooden spoon until mixture resembles thick, cohesive dough; set aside to cool to room temperature, 10 to 15 minutes.
To make the cake: Adjust oven rack to upper-middle position and heat oven to 325° F. Cut 16-inch length parchment paper or aluminum foil and fold lengthwise to 7-inch width. Spray 8-inch square baking dish with nonstick cooking spray and fit parchment into dish, pushing it into corners and up sides; allow excess to overhang edges of dish.
In bowl of standing mixer fitted with paddle attachment, mix flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt on low speed to combine. With mixer running at low speed, add butter one piece at a time; continue beating until mixture resembles moist crumbs, with no visible butter chunks remaining, 1 to 2 minutes. Add egg, yolk, vanilla, and buttermilk; beat on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 1 minute, scraping once if necessary.
Transfer batter to baking pan; using rubber spatula, spread batter into even layer. Break apart crumb topping into large pea-sized pieces between your thumb, pointer, and middle fingers and spread in even layer over batter, beginning with edges and then working toward center.
Bake until crumbs are golden and wooden skewer inserted into center of cake comes out clean, 35 to 40 minutes. Cool on wire rack at least 30 minutes. Remove cake from pan by lifting parchment overhang. Dust with confectioners’ sugar just before serving.

NOTES

If you don't have cake flour, you can make your own. You'll need a total of 3 cups of cake flour for the crumb topping and the cake. So, make the cake flour first and then divide it up for the called-for amounts in the crumb topping and cake recipes. To do this, remove 9 tablespoons of all-purpose flour and replace it with 9 tablespoons of cornstarch. Then, sift it together 5 times before dividing it up.
It's important to take your time when adding the crumb topping to the top of the batter. Start at the edges and work your way towards the center. This will help prevent the crumbs from sinking into the cake since the heaviest part of the batter (the center) will have some lift by the time you get there. And whatever you do, don't pat the crumbs down - you'll push the air out of the batter and prevent the cake from rising.

A summer favorite

With the summer season in full effect I thought there was no better time to share a family favorite. What I love about this recipe is that it requires only 5 ingredients, takes no more than 10 minutes and requires zero cooking! I am a sucker for anything ice cream and this recipe is fool proof. I promise!

Arrange 12 ice cream sandwiches in the bottom of a 9 x 13-inch dish. As you can see from the photo below, you will need to cut the last ice cream sandwich in half in order to get it to fit in the pan. Trust me -- this doesn't have to be perfect (it will still taste amazing)!
Allow the ice cream sandwiches to soften a bit, and then use the back of a spoon (or your fingers) to gently press them down a little bit. You can skip this step if you're using a particularly deep pan.
Top the first layer of ice cream sandwiches with a layer of whipped topping, drizzle with chocolate and caramel syrups, and sprinkle with toppings of choice. I have used everything from chopped nuts, sprinkles, Reese's peanut butter cups.... go wild!
Repeat the layers once more, using the remaining Cool Whip to "frost" the top of the cake.
Freeze the homemade ice cream sandwich cake for at least 1-2 hours or overnight, until firm.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in Office Cleaning

Keeping your workplace clean is important for many reasons. Cleanliness is a huge factor in ensuring the health and safety of everyone who comes and goes in your office. A clean workplace has also been scientifically proven to boost mood and productivity.

The problem is that there are a lot of things that you can get wrong when it comes to DIY office cleaning. As such, it’s highly recommended to hire a professional cleaner to make things easier and ensure that everything is done correctly. For minor cleaning jobs or while waiting for the pros to arrive, however, here are some things that you should NOT be doing:

Using the Wrong Cleaning Tools

Different materials and surfaces require different cleaning tools and products. Using the wrong kind and/or amount can lead to damage. At the very least, the cleaning process won’t be as efficient and you also won’t get the desired results.

Ideally, you should wait for your office cleaners to come in to do the job so you don’t have to worry about making mistakes. However, there really are times when you have to handle the cleaning on your own. If that’s the case, don’t hesitate to ask the pros for some guidance.

Often times it can leave a greasy residue that only attracts dust.

Scrubbing the Carpet

When you spill something on the carpet, your first instinct is to scrub it off. However, this can untwist and damage the fibers; you’re lucky if the material can spring back to its original form. If not, then you can say goodbye to your gorgeous, fluffy rug.

The best thing to do about carpet stains is to blot them with paper towels. Soak up as much of the liquid as possible, before applying your carpet cleaner. Again, don’t scrub! Let the cleaner sit for the recommended number of minutes and then blot it off. If the stain persists, repeat the process. As long as you don’t allow the stain to seep into the fibers, you likely won’t have to deal with long-term damage.

Cleaning Visible Areas Only

Spot cleaning is great for delicate clothes. In your office? Not so much. In fact, efficient and effective office cleaning requires you to be as thorough as possible.

Remember that an office has plenty of hidden areas where dust, dirt, and grime can accumulate. These include the undersides of tables, the spaces under furniture, and the individual slats of blinds. If you don’t clean every nook and cranny, you might invite bacteria, fungi, and viruses to breed in your workspace, resulting in allergies and other medical conditions.

Thus, it’s for everyone’s benefit that you clean all areas of your office—especially those that aren’t immediately visible. You don’t have to clean them every day, but make sure they get attended to regularly. Your professional cleaners will know what to do, but it also won’t hurt to remind them.

Not Emptying the Vacuum Often

Defined coffee opened its flagship location in Huntersville NC just three years ago. Owners Anthony Nuges and Keifer Moskaluk are now the proud owners of three locations with more on the horizon.

We are honored to care for their new location in Mooresville NC in the Morino Mall. This cafe is home to their roastery. They roast coffee on-site and the whole process can be seen from inside the cafe.

I had the opportunity to chat with Anthony and Keifer. As a coffee lover myself, I was equally excited to see the process and meet the team. This cafe has become my new favorite off-site work spot. Not only are their unique blends amazing but the staff is a joy to be around. Always greeted with a smile and genuine interest in my day, I have found myself coming back to this beautiful location. Sheets Laundry launched in 2019, and since then, their two-man team of "the Chris's" Chris Videau and Chris Campbell, has grown into a dedicated group of change-makers. Each is passionate and committed to helping save our planet by providing plastic-free, eco-friendly alternatives to your normal laundry routine.

CEO and co-founder, Chris Videau, and his wife Laurian have collectively served over 27 years in the military and traveled to over 20 different countries. During their time overseas, they both became painfully aware of the vast amount of plastic that pollutes our oceans. Chris and Laurian had the opportunity to see the global plastic crisis first-hand and they wanted to do something about it. So, after leaving the military, they set to work creating a plan that would allow for a more sustainable future for the generations to come.

Sheets started when 2 guys met at their sons’ t-ball game, then it evolved into a small business operating out of a garage. Fast forward to now: they serve thousands of people and help equip them to make a difference.

A visit at Angels & Sparrows

In our first-ever client spotlight, we have chosen Angels & Sparrows Community Table. From the moment I walked through their doors, I was overwhelmed by the kindness that emanates from every corner. I had an opportunity to sit down with Jessika Tucker- Angels & Sparrows Executive director as well as Cindy Deutsch-Director of Development to discuss their mission, and how we can help. Before leaving I was certain to add my name to the list of volunteers.

Everyone is welcome around the table

Angels & Sparrows is a Community Table and Resource Center for families and individuals who need assistance with food, health, education, housing, finances, and more.

As you drive through the Huntersville area, it is hard to conceive that just steps away is Angels & Sparrows, what some would consider a soup kitchen, they refer to themselves as a community table. They serve anywhere between 150- 500 families in need of a warm nutritious meal. The doors opened in 2008 and since then over 1 million meals have been served.

When asked what their mission is, the word used most is "Dignity". "We start with a nourishing meal served with dignity and foster community and a path to hope for those facing food insecurity in their daily lives through our programs, celebrations, and experiences – transforming daily interactions into personal connections and a sense of belonging."

"Dignity is at the heart of everything we do," said Jessika "All programming is designed with that in mind. The dignity of advocating for yourself, that your children have the same opportunities as everyone else. To empower families. They are served with dignity and then they go out and reflect that back into the community"

Their recent project was to redecorate the center with restaurant-style seating. Long tables lined with linens, fresh flowers, and freshly painted walls adorned with paintings from local artists now welcome their guests. This new atmosphere is far more reflective of the warmth and kindness that fills the space.

When you peak back into the kitchen the volunteers are all too happy to share how appreciative they are for the new cabinets and countertops. All donated by local businesses.

While providing nourishing meals is paramount, their approach to tackling food insecurities is also focused on a multi-step approach that touches on the following:

Should You Hire a Cleaning Company

What I have learned

One thing I see so often is business owners attempting to manage their office cleaning in-house. By in-house, I mean hiring a part-time employee to clean, or delegate cleaning duties to current staff. We are often called in when this effort goes sideways. Let me share what I have experienced as both an office manager that delegated as well as outsourced.

Should you outsource your commercial cleaning services or should you hire in-house janitorial employees?

One of the main misconceptions I find is that we all assume that cleaning is easy and everyone can do it. Most of us have been cleaning our whole lives, right? So the question becomes, should you outsource your commercial cleaning services, or should you hire in-house janitorial employees?

Believe it or not, the question has nothing to do with cleaning. It’s about whether or not your in-house janitorial staff is a match for what your business does now. Here are just some of the questions to consider. Can you handle managing hourly part-time employees? Can you maintain quality over time? Can you hire and deal with employee turnover? Does that match the business model that you have now, or is that going to completely take your focus off of what you’re doing and distract you from your main business?

When I sat down and organized a cleaning system similar to a chore chart I implemented with my children, I was shocked at the staff’s response. Most felt stretched thin already and were downright angry to be asked to clean the bathrooms even 2 days a month. I persevered and pushed through but despite my best efforts, the quality of clean was not there. Turns out that if you are holding someone to a task that they despise, it shows. Employee morale dropped, the office was not cleaned to my standards and the constant follow-ups were harder on me than it was on them.

The second option was to hire someone to clean part-time for our office. While the cost was more, I was only having to communicate my cleaning needs with one person. Holding that one person accountable. Those were the highlights, the downside was when they didn’t report to work I came in to find the trash overflowing and the paper products empty. I was in a constant cycle of hiring part-time employees and training them. This was not my wheelhouse or the best use of my time. I was responsible for ordering all of the supplies and disposables.

Here is what I learned by trying to manage an office using an in-house cleaner.

Cleaning Systems

You need cleaning systems in place. Checklists and tasks will help you determine whether or not the tasks are complete or incomplete. You’ll need to provide equipment--vacuum cleaners, cleaning solutions, mops, brooms etc. All of this equipment needs to be on-sight and maintained. If the vacuum cleaner breaks, you will need to replace or repair it. These can cost upwards of $700. Supplies will need to be easily refilled and restocked so that the cleaning team has everything they need.

Recruit, Train, Repeat.

Be prepared for high turnover rates. The average employment of a cleaning employee in the cleaning industry is about 3-6 months. That means that you would have to have a system in place to rehire and retrain a person for that job that frequently.

Scheduling time to meet with prospective janitorial staff on a regular basis and creating a training program that yields the results you’re looking for can be time-consuming and take your focus away from the main objective of your business.

Regular Management

You will need to create weekly schedules with part-time employees and make sure they’re on time for their shifts. Just as you monitor and review the work of your current employees, you’ll need a quality control system in place for your cleaning staff as well. This way you know that the work is being completed, and ideally, improving over time.

Unexpected Emergencies

Who would be available to handle unexpected emergencies such as equipment breaking down? If you have a small staff of two people, what happens when one of the team members calls out sick or takes a vacation? Or if the security alarm sounds and the team isn’t able to shut it off? Who would be available to handle these circumstances? That often falls on the business manager or owner and equals late night calls.

It was a few months before I realized that this was also not a manageable solution for my office.

If you think modern day cleaning is hard work, be glad you didn’t live in these times! First off, professional cleaning, in times of old, was rarely done in teams! So, no jokes to share, or conversations to have.

The Egyptians had slaves who cleaned. These cleaning slaves were also expected to help the wealthy with their makeup and clothes; spa treatments and more, all so the wealthy could go out in style! Can you imagine us, at Trinity Commercial Cleaning, having to give spa treatments?!

The Babylonians discovered that contaminated water could kill you. So, every day, without fail,

fresh water was brought in. Considering the water sources may have been miles away from where you were cleaning AND that the size of your buckets would be small, that would mean several trips! On average, one person had to make 10 trips just to clean one building!

The Persians would ‘shake their houses’ every year. Since most of the materials could be removed easily, it was not a big deal to shake the rugs outside and so on. But can you imagine doing this only one time a year?! That would be one heavy rug to shake. Today, we call ‘shaking the house’. Spring cleaning .

The Greeks also had slaves to do their cleaning. However, if you remember your Greek history, consider all those marble statues. If you were a cleaning slave, you would have to clean all of those, too!

The Romans created aqueducts and sewer systems to help improve cleaning the cities. They also used public bath houses. The irony of this is that before you could enter the public baths, you doused yourself in olive oil and pumice, used a stirgil (a sharp metal scraper), to remove dirt and sweat. I’m so glad we have soap to clean ourselves with!!

In the Dark Ages, almost NO ONE cleaned. As a result, lots of bacteria built up. On the bright side, as soon as this was discovered, massive improvements were made in personal cleaning as well as community wide.

Joseph Lister (think the mouthwash Listerine) created the first antiseptic. While it cleaned and disinfected medical equipment, today’s technology has vastly improved how antiseptics work.

Looking for an adventure?

Like a cicada dormant for an extended period of time; 15 months to be exact, it awakens, we too wake. Shedding the security of our face masks to feel the sun once again on our lower faces. We look around and wonder how we didn’t know that our neighbor grew a handlebar mustache. Are we ready to return to the office? What did we do with our downtime BC (before Covid)? While we may still want to stay at home, we are feeling a longing to explore just a bit. Baby steps I say… I am here to help. You may not know that right here in our little town of Mooresville lies a wealth of experiences ready for exploration. Here are just a few.

1. The Ale Trail

Did you know that Mooresville is home to over half a dozen well-loved breweries? If you are looking for some grown-up fun, check them out, pick your favorite “everyone knows your name” location like Ghostface , also home to some OUTSTANDING pizza!. Or Jolly Roger , King Canary , Hoptown , Beer Lab , Brew and Feed , and On Tap , all call Mooresville home. 2. Carrigan Farms

Carrigan Farms is a 5th generation family owned farm. Our most beloved location for picking all things natural also hides a little hidden gem, a Rock Quarry . Climb the rocks to swing like Tarzan and plummet into a pool of freshwater. Sit on the sand with a book and a blanket or challenge yourself to climb higher and jump further. This is a favorite of my teens. They serve their famous “Quarry burger”, snow cones, fries, beer, and wine can also be found on site. Just remember to bring cash or check, as I have had to take the “ walk of shame” too many times, and search for a nearby ATM. Consider yourself warned.

Reservations are suggested, and spots fill up fast especially in the heat of the summer. $5 to reserve your spot online and you will receive a $5 food voucher when you check in. $15 per person. They do require a swim test to go without a vest and a pull up test is required for the high jumps. On the way out be sure to visit the farm stands for seasonal fruits and vegetables. The farm is also the location for the awesome fall attraction Scarrigan Farms , haunted trail. A bit too creepy for my tastes, I don’t know if they should be allowed to get that close to me with a chainsaw! But, again, the kids love it so I digress. Check it out this fall.

3. Racecity USA

Do you feel the need for speed? Mooresville has been named Racecity USA for a reason. It is home to countless Nascar team shops, museums, and experiences. Take a tour of various shops like Penske ( a personal favorite of Trinity Commercial Cleaning ), Kyle Busch Motorsports , JR Motorsports . Take a trip down memory lane with NC Auto Racing Hall of Fame , Memory Lane Museum , orShelton Classic Performance. If you loved the movie Days of Thunder you are welcome to take a look at the barn featured in the movie. Appropriately named “The Days of Thunder Barn ''. It is not advisable to enter, in fact, some call it the most dilapidated attraction in Mooresville, but it's ours, it's here, you are welcome.

4. Lake Norman State Park

Located on the largest manmade lake in North Carolina. It boasts one of the region’s more popular mountain biking networks, offering 30.5 miles of single-track trail. Nearby are a 125-yard-long swim beach and bathhouse complex as well as a boat ramp and opportunities for fishing from spots along park trails. A family campground with 32-sites and a group campground are available during warm-weather months, and a community building with kitchen facilities, restrooms, and fireplace can be rented for family and group events year-round. Free interpretive programs are complemented by educational exhibits throughout the visitor center and along the child-friendly Dragonfly Trail. Rent kayaks, paddleboards, paddleboat, picnic, you name it. Get out and experience mother nature at her finest.

5. Lazy 5 Ranch

So a giraffe walks up to a car. That's it, it's not a punchline. At Lazy 5 Ranch you are guaranteed that a large animal will walk straight up to your car and ask you for food. Lazy 5 Ranch is not a publicly funded zoo. Resident Henry Hampton opened the gates to Lazy 5 Ranch in 1993. 30 years later, the Hampton family is still inviting neighbors to visit and experience their exotic animal collection. They are now home to over 750 animals from 6 different continents. Visits to Lazy 5 are a right of passage for all elementary students from nearby schools. Their goals are to help the recovery of several endangered species including the Grevy's zebra, the Schimitar Horned Oryx, and the ring-tailed lemur. Enjoy a wagon ride or drive on thru. Feel like just enjoying a bit of scenery? Queens Landing is a great spot to enjoy the lake. It is best known to be the starting point for the Catawaba Queen and her Lake Norman dinner cruises. This is a great option for a unique date night. The dinner cruise boards at 7 pm most evenings, reservations are booked a few weeks in advance. Adults are $64.99 a person. Or hop on board for sightseeing cruises. An adult ticket is 19.99 and 14.99 for kids.

Here are 10 simple tips that can help simplify the process.

De-grease cabinets.

Just like your cooking tools, cupboards can get grimy when you're making dinner. Add a little dish soap to a spray bottle with warm water to mist away from the grease. Then, rinse with a well-wrung cloth and dry.

Freshen up your microwave

Make caked-on grime easier to wipe off by heating a cup of water, several tablespoons of vinegar and a chopped-up lemon on high until the microwave's window is steamy. Let the bowl sit for 5 minutes before you open the door, and wipe the inside clean with ease.

Make your bathroom shine

To clean grimy grout, mix 3/4 cup household chlorine bleach with 1-gallon water and use a stiff brush to apply to one small area at a time. (Wear rubber gloves and eye protection.) Let it sit for several minutes, then scrub and rinse.

Follow a cleaning “path”

Clean from top to bottom, back of a room to the front, and in “slices,” moving in one direction around the room, finishing the floor last. By starting high in a room, all the dirt will fall down onto those things you have not cleaned yet, once you finish a slice, you don’t have to think, you just keep moving forward.

Natural, Streak Free glass cleaner

Mix 1/2 cup white vinegar with 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol (70% concentration) and 2 cups water and dispense into an empty spray bottle. To clean your windows, wait for a cool, cloudy day and squirt the solution onto the glass, wiping with a clean microfiber cloth to avoid streaking.

Skip the polish

Your wooden surfaces and hardwood floors only require polishing every once in a while (once or twice a year, or when they begin to look dingy). All you really need to keep them shiny is a dry microfiber cloth. Your furniture will actually get less dusty without using furniture polish.

Easily buff out floor scuffs

Protect your hardwood by removing small marks with a sock or clean tennis ball. To erase bigger scuffs, add a little baking soda to a damp cloth and gently rub. Then rinse with a damp paper towel and dry.

Make an all-purpose cleaner

Here's a recipe that will make nearly every surface gleam (especially kitchen counters, appliances, and inside the refrigerator). Combine 4 tablespoons baking soda and 1-quart warm water, and wipe messes away with a sponge.

Fight pet stink

Deodorize the soft, cushy places around your house — including the dog bed — by sprinkling surfaces with baking soda, letting it sit for 15 minutes, and then vacuuming it up.

Use a butter knife to clean air vents

Butter knives are not just for buttering toast, put it to good use and get into those hard-to-reach dusty vents. Simply wrap the knife in a rag and wipe between the slats. Then, open the windows and run your central air to fill your home with fresh spring air (just be sure your heat or AC isn’t on while you’re running the fan).

Spring Cleaning, more than a tradition

The gray skies and cold air have finally taken their toll…

Once upon a time, I would scoff at college students, sitting in their dorm rooms aglow with the light from their light therapy kits. The last-ditch effort, I thought, to keep the supposed “seasonal depression” at bay. I scoff no more as I struggle some mornings to find the motivation to seize the day. It’s too cold I have told myself, too dreary. As the thought of warmer days dance in my head, I find myself nesting in a way that I haven’t since my last pregnancy. Images of my Grandmother come to my mind.

Grandma held to her tradition of Spring Cleaning. As a young woman, I thought this was because she was a bit obsessive. As a background, plastic covers adorned her living room sofas. This clearly identified the room that was off-limits to anyone but guests. I remember when it came time to replace the brown, floral, and tweed sofas, their function, and impeccable condition had far exceeded its comfort and esthetics. The sofa could have been donated to a museum, as it was in pristine condition as if frozen in a plastic hermetically sealed time capsule for 30 years.

Grandma would begin the ritual as she packed away her Christmas decorations. She would embrace the lack of clutter for a period of time. Then sometime in early March, she would focus in, curtains would come down to be washed, hung out to dry and pressed, windows, floors, knick-knacks soaked and scrubbed of seasons worth of dust, cabinets scoured inside and out. I would watch her with amazement as this woman I adored worked with the precision of an orchestra conductor. Not a corner was left unturned.

I see now as an adult that it was not just a cleaning and renewal of her home but a renewal of spirit. Think of the last time you sat in the car wash, as the rainbow soap ran over your windshield, followed by the water, then the air. Suddenly the world was brighter, cleaner, somehow made fresh. As if the simple act of a $10.00 car wash had made everything right again. It was the same for Grandma.

During the festival of Songkran, Thais not only use this time to give their houses a good deep cleaning, but they also clean any images or statues of Buddha in their homes or at shrines. During parades, people may also throw water at images of Buddha to ritually cleanse them. All of the cleanliness is supposed to bring blessings and good luck in the new year.

The demand for commercial cleaning services is increasing with the Coronavirus crisis. Many people are becoming increasingly more aware of the importance of workplace hygiene. As we are now well into the throws of winter, we are in peak cold and flu season, too. Removing and not just masking odors boils down to four basic principles; using an effective odor control product, locating the exact source of the odor and eliminating it, frequent cleaning, and maintaining cleaning equipment.

The trend to cut the budget allocated for cleaning services in commercial facilities can often be defined as stepping over dollars to pick up pennies. Allowing the source of your business odors to fester often leads to a most unpleasant cloud of unwanted scents that are usually associated with mold and mildew.

If you are a business owner or manager, you must remember that fragrance has a powerful effect on human behavior. It controls to a large extent a client’s perception about a business, how a facility is run, and how much they really care about its customers and workers. The sources of office odors may surprise you.

Floor drain traps tend to dry out over long weekends and allow sewer gases to come back through. This leaves a potent sewage odor that is often hard to locate.

When thinking of office odors we usually blame urinals and restrooms. Often these are cleaner than your co-worker desk, because they are being regularly cleaned by a professional team. However, if they are not odors can build up in urinals and require acid-based cleaning and flushing to eliminate the bacteria.

Floors and grout lines can also be a culprit for lingering odors. They too need to be cleaned frequently to remove all traces of urine and other bacteria that have been tracked in. Carpets can trap odor-causing bacteria. Perhaps they were previously cleaned by a system that required large amounts of moisture. This can lead to wicking as well as mold and mildew. Service Before Self

One of the most important things I learned from my time with the Air Force is "service before self." This military motto applies to a successful business, too; if I want so badly for our clients to love us and never want to look for another commercial cleaning company, then we have to offer a service that blows their expectations away. This happens with great customer service. I cannot look at what our competition is doing and hope to have better results; rather, we have to rise above everyone else in the area that is trying to offer what looks like a substitute service. Imagine if CarMax did what every other used car salesman did when they were first starting out. They never would have become a billion-dollar-plus company. Or what about Dollar Shave Club, or Harry’s Razors? If they would have tried to do exactly what Gilette was doing, they never would have survived. The success of these three companies was due to the fact that they were willing to listen to what their customers truly wanted. People did not like the used car buying process of the time; over 80% of people hated haggling on price, but 100% of the used car industry did that until CarMax disrupted it by cutting that part out of the process, and adding a 5-day money back guarantee. The two razor companies knocked Gilette off the pedestal it had been on for years by finding a new manufacturing process to lower the price of the razor, thus doing exactly what their customers wanted. That is what we need to do in our industries. We have to listen to what our customers want, not what our competition is doing.

So that begs the question: what do our customers want? Our research has shown so far that they do not like when cleaning companies lock them into annual contracts because they get locked into a service that they do not necessarily like.

Second, they want peace of mind. My company cleans some pretty unique places such as NASCAR facilities and bank corporate headquarters; therefore, I have to be very particular about who I am hiring. I have no idea why people do not think about this more, but commercial cleaning companies have full access to buildings when nobody else is around. I consider this a very important thing to keep in mind. We have the trust of the businesses we serve, something we absolutely cannot take for granted. I, as the business owner, need to have this in the forefront of my mind when hiring employees.

Third, clients want a company that does what it says it was going to do. We all know that cleaning is not rocket science, so why is it that things get missed all the time? This is one of the biggest complaints I hear. I combat this by having a checklist that is specific to every single location. The client signs the checklist before we ever start cleaning so that we know exactly what is expected of us, and the client knows exactly what we are supposed to be doing.

Just wait, it gets even better! If we ever fail to do something on the checklist, then my clients have access to our satisfaction guarantee, which states, “If we fail to meet or exceed your expectations every single time, then lunch is on us.” I will personally stop by and give the client a $50 gift card to buy lunch. If you are paying us to do a job and we do not do that job, then we are stealing from you. It is as simple as that. The reason I have the satisfaction guarantee in place is because my company is made up of humans that can make mistakes, and I am the worst offender.

Fourth, when we do make mistakes, how do we recover? We do not want to make mistakes, and we work very hard to make sure we have systems in place so that we do not make mistakes; however, they still happen. I have given out just under 10 satisfaction guarantees in the past 3 years, but I really wish it was 0. The point is, when we do make a mistake, how do we recover from it? Do we own the mistake, address it, and come up with a plan to make sure it is not repeated, or do we sweep it under the rug (pun definitely intended)?

Finally, it all comes down to the fact that we exist to make other peoples lives easier. Our clients hire skilled labor to perform certain tasks throughout the day, not to clean the office, clinic, or warehouse. We were hired to do that, and we need to do it so well that the client never has to follow up with us because that pulls them away from focusing on their job. It's simple, really: if you say you will clean the facility and be the best cleaning company in the area, then you darn well better clean the facility and be the best cleaning company in the area. That is the essence of good customer service.

Great Clients Think Alike

Just because a potential client is asking for my services does not mean we will be a good fit. I have to truly value my clients, and they me, for us to have a great working relationship. I spend a lot of time thinking about my clients outside of the hours we are actually cleaning t heir location. For example, a few months ago, I drove an hour away to a peach farm to pick over 800 peaches for my clients. I have been delivering the peaches to them to let them know how much I value them. Now, this gesture is completely meaningless if my company does not do the job we were hired to do.

I only want to have clients that value my employees as much as I do. For example, tipping

commercial cleaners is unheard of in the industry; however, not long ago one of my

clients named John did just that. He wrote a note to the two cleaners thanking them for the

great job they did and left it along with $40 for them to find. I think that was such a

beautiful gesture because he went above and beyond to show appreciation to people who

usually do not get appreciation.

We work after hours, or on weekends, and the people who work in the buildings we clean never see us. The only time a cleaning company gets noticed is when something goes wrong. Well, we go to great lengths to change that. I want my clients to know that we truly care about them and are trying to go above and beyond for them. We are trying to bring the human element back to commercial cleaning. We are not j ust a service, we are a company that cares about you and we want to do such a good job that you never want to look for another cleaning company again.

We want clients that are not willing to settle for "just okay" service. I take a lot of pride in my company and I have worked very hard to set us apart from the industry. In fact, the main headline of our website is “Changing the Cleaning Industry” for a very specific reason. Cleaning is not difficult; however, I cannot tell you how many times I walk in to give a quote to someone and they say something along the lines of, “we have had 6 cleaning companies in the last 3 years.” I hate hearing this because it automatically makes me not only a commodity, but also the enemy. Here I am, just one more cleaning company promising the world, but will I deliver?

Recently, I hand-delivered peaches picked fresh from a farm in South Carolina to all of my clients as a token of our appreciation because they are all awesome clients. We are grateful they trust us to put in the work to make their location clean and beautiful. Sometimes we make mistakes and fail, but they are fair with their criticism, and allow us to grow and overcome the mistakes we make. It is impossible to hire a company that does not make a single mistake, but it is possible to hire one that owns their mistakes, does everything to mitigate them, and seeks to make things right. Our clients see that we truly want to change the cleaning industry.

Peach Spice Sweet Tea

Makes: 1 gallon

3 fresh South Carolina peaches (use the freshest you can find)

1 gallon water, divided

1 cinnamon stick

1/2 cup black tea leaves Sugar to taste

3 crushed cardamom pods

Mint sprigs, for garnish

Step 1) Cut the peaches into chunks and place in a blender with 2 cups of the water and blend until semi-smooth. Pour into a large nonreactive pot with the remaining water, tea leaves, cardamom pods, and cinnamon stick. Bring to a boil and then shut off. Let it sit in the pot for 10 minutes to infuse the flavors. Strain, cool, and sweeten with sugar to desired taste. Serve on ice with a sprig of mint.

Fresh Peach Salsa

Yields: 4 cups

4 medium peaches peeled and pitted

2 cans (4 oz each) chopped green chilies

2 large tomatoes, cut into wedges and seeded

4 teaspoons cider vinegar

1/2 sweet onion, cut into wedges

1 teaspoon lime juice

1/2 cup fresh cilantro leaves

1/4 teaspoon pepper

2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed

baked tortilla chip scoops

Step 1) In a food processor, combine the first five ingredients; cover and pulse until coarsely chopped. Add the chilies, vinegar, lime juice and pepper; cover and pulse just until blended. Transfer to a serving bowl; chill until serving. Serve with chips.

Chilled Peach Soup

Yields: 2 servings

1-1/2 cups chopped peeled fresh peaches

1/8 teaspoon almond extract

1/2 cup plain yogurt

2 tablespoons sliced almonds, toasted

1/2 teaspoon lemon juice

Step 1) In a blender, combine the peaches, yogurt, lemon juice and extract; cover and process until smooth. Refrigerate until chilled. Sprinkle with almonds just before serving.

Shrimp Salad with Peaches

Makes: 4 servings

3/4 pound uncooked large shrimp

4 medium peaches, halved

1/2 cup hoisin sauce

1.4 teaspoon salt

6 tablespoons olive oil, divided

8 cups fresh arugula

1/4 cup lemon juice, divided

1/2 cup cilantro leaves

1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce

1/2 cup goat cheese

1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

1 medium lemon, quartered

Step 1) Peel and devein shrimp, leaving tails on. In a large resealable plastic bag, combine the hoisin sauce, 2 tablespoons oil, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, hot sauce and cumin. Add the shrimp; seal bag and turn to coat. Refrigerate for up to 30 minutes. Drain and discard the marinade.

Step 2) Thread shrimp on four metal or soaked wooden skewers. Moisten a paper towel with cooking oil; using long-handled tongs, rub on the grill rack to coat lightly. Brush peach halves with 1 tablespoon oil.

Step 3) Gill shrimp and peaches, covered, over medium heat or broil for 4 in. from the heat for 6-8 minutes or until shrimp turns pink, turning once.

Step 4) In a large bowl, combine salt with the remaining oil and lemon juice. Add the arugula and cilantro; toss to coat. Divide among four plates. Top with the peaches, shrimp and goat cheese. Squeeze lemon over salads.

Peach-Chipotle Baby Back Ribs

Makes: 8 servings (2 cups sauce)

3 tablespoons brown sugar

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 tablespoons kosher salt

2 large sweet onions, finely chopped

1 teaspoon pepper

2/3 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

4 finely chopped chipotle peppers in adobo sauce plus 2 tablespoons sauce

8 pounds pork baby back ribs (about 3 racks)

3 tablespoons white vinegar

6 medium peaches, peeled and sliced

4 teaspoons ground mustard

Step 1) Preheat oven to 325o. In a small bowl combine brown sugar, salt, pepper and cayenne. If necessary, remove the thin membrane from back ribs; discard membrane. Rub brown sugar mixture over ribs. Transfer to large roasting pans. Add 1 in. hot water. Bake, covered, 2 & 1/2 -3 hours or until ribs are tender.

Step 2) Meanwhile, place peaches in a blender; cover and process until smooth.

Step 3) In a large saucepan, heat oil over medium heat. Add onions; cook and stir brown sugar chipotle peppers, adobo sauce. Vinegar, mustard, and peach puree; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, 25-30 minutes or until slightly thickened.

Step 4) Drain ribs. Moisten a paper towel with cooking oil; using long-handled tongs, rub it on grill rack to coat lightly. Grill ribs, pork side down, covered, over medium heat for 5-7 minutes or until browned. Turn ribs: brush with 2 cups sauce. Cook 5-7 minutes longer or until sauce is thickened. Serve with the remaining sauce.

Miss Birdsong’s Fried Peachy Pie

Makes: 8 servings

2 tablespoons butter

1 (8-count) container refrigerated flaky biscuit dough

4 Clingstone peaches, peeled, cored, and sliced; or 1 (15-ounce) can peaches in light syrup, drained

1/2 cup sugar

2 tablespoons water

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk

1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice

Step 1) Add the butter to a large sauté pan and melt over medium heat. Add the peaches sugar, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Cook over medium heat until the peaches are soft, about 15 minutes. Remove from the heat and cool.

Step 2) When the mixture has cooled, roll the biscuits out on a lightly floured surface so that each biscuit forms a 7– to 8-inch circle. Brush the edges of the circle with water. Fold the circle over the filling to make a halfmoon shape. Seal by pressing the edges with the tines of a fork.

Step 3) Fill a deep- fryer with oil and preheat to 350 degrees. Carefully add the pies to the oil, one at a time, and fry until golden brown, turning the pies as necessary for even browning, about 5 to 8 minutes. Drain on paper towels for 2 minutes. Drizzle with sweetened condensed milk and serve immediately.

CoronaVirus Pandemic: What you Need to Know

2020 did not start well. Literally. COVID-19, dubbed the coronavirus, has been spreading from where it began in mainland China through the rest of the world. And now, we face the dangers of this pandemic here in the US. Leaders in affected countries as well as at-risk nations are taking action to combat the spread of the virus and protect their populaces; some actions are more extreme than others. China's cleaning or destroying money . People traveling abroad are being held in quarantine to slow the spread. Airplanes are flying empty. But the worst is yet to come: many experts predict this virus will spread through most of the developed world. It's a scary testament to just how connected our world has become, both digitally and physically through travel and supply chains.

Indisputably, this virus is causing chaos for the world at large. What does this challenge the world at large is facing mean for us in our daily lives lived in our corner of the world? Do not despair. There are simple ways to protect yourself from illness. Like in any other flu season, there are actionable steps you can take to protect yourself and those you are in contact with.

- Frequently wash your hands for at least 20 seconds.

- Reasonably limit your attendance to large gatherings and travel as much as possible.

- Limit personal contact with others in public; for example, instead of the timeless handshake, give fist bumps to greet others.

- Don't touch your face as much as possible.

- Be especially careful around people at risk with weakened or nonfunctional immune systems. Many of us who contract the virus will be able to fight it without medical help, but many will require assistance from medicine.

- Keep your house, your car, your office, your "space" clean. Develop a regular routine that fits your needs. Dust and vacuum particulates such as dirt and dander. Use disinfectant on commonly touched surfaces. (We hope you are doing these things already, and if you aren't, we can help.)

- If you do contract the virus, quarantine yourself to prevent further spread.

And finally, carry on living an exciting, beautiful, hygienic life. Stay safe out there!

If Your Business Was a Tootsie Pop, What would be At The Center?

Core values. Mission statement. Vision statement. Yawn. I know, this is so overused and abused, but just hear me out. I am talking about hardcore core values- you know, those things that shape every part of the company. The owner(s) or executives of a business impart a lot of themselves into their company, so they need to discover what their personal core values are and share them with their entire organization and all who do business with it. There are many paths of self-discovery to find out who you are at your core. For example, I texted my 5 closest friends and asked them to text back just 1 word to describe me. I was pretty amazed at the responses because 3 of them were the exact same. Using this information, I also thought about the things that drive me crazy.

After using both sets of information, both things I liked and disliked, I was able to discover those things that matter most to me. The 4 core values of my business are:

1. Be honest

2. Inspire growth

3. Make it happen

4. Have fun

I will go further in depth with all of these core values at a later date, but suffice it to say that I try to make all of my big decisions based upon just these 4 qualities. I make sure my clients and employees are a core value match; if I meet someone who is not, I save us both time and frustration by inviting them to explore other opportunities. You may think I am crazy, but stop and think about it for a minute. Not everyone in the world gets along with everyone else, or has the same values. My dad always said, “Son, it is a difference of opinions that makes horse racing interesting.” I have always loved that quote because it reminds me that we are all different.

Some clients may not want to have fun, so every time my cleaning company organizes an Easter Egg hunt in their office while we are cleaning over the weekend, just to surprise them on Monday, they may not like it. That is totally fine. This just means that we may not be a good core value match, so I do not want to waste their time or patience by serving as their cleaning company.

Apparently, Everyone Needs To Drink More Water

It’s funny how most of us ( but not all ) in the United States, even here in Mooresville, North Carolina, have access to clean drinking water, and several options from tap to bottled to even boxed, and yet a good majority of us are always on the brink of dehydration.

Almost every article about hydration ever will tell you that if you even feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated. More scientifically put: “Lose just 1.5% of the water in your body (the human body is usually about 60% H2O), and you've reached the tipping point of dehydration .”

Don’t believe it? Here are some of the most common symptoms of dehydration and the havoc they cause on your body. The one that will impact your social life is bad breath. Without plenty of water to keep your mouth moist, bacteria will start to grow in your mouth and it smells. Even if you do not consider yourself a vain person, unhealthy looking skin should concern you. Besides feeling tight, and lacking its usual glow, dehydrated skin can exaggerate any wrinkles or dark bags under your eyes. On top of that, dehydration is sometimes interpreted by the body as hunger, specifically for sugar. If you are not careful, you could gain unwanted weight .

Physically, dehydration can do a lot of things to your body. “When you're dehydrated, your blood pressure drops, heart rate increases, [and] blood flow to the brain slows—all of which can make you tired.” It can also slow down your blood circulation, which can make you more prone to muscle cramps. The small blood vessels in your brain are sensitive to your level of hydration. When you are running low, you are more likely to succumb to more intense headaches, including migraines.

When your body pulls more water away from your skin to better retain it, your body is more easily affected by the temperature around you, such as shivering even when it is not really that cold out . “Hydration is essential to guard against heat stroke in warm weather and frostbite in cold temperatures, as your body’s circulation plays a protective role in both extremes of temperature and needs water to function properly .” Two more results of your body trying to retain water include messing with your urinary and bowel movements. Your urine will be darker because it is now a higher concentration of waste then normal and your bowel movements will be harder and therefore, more difficult to pass.

Mentally, dehydration can affect you in two ways: loss of concentration and irritability. Besides being cranky, the loss of concentration could really affect your quality of work. Many studies have been done on hydration and concentration. “Functions such as complex problem-solving, coordination, and attention suffered the most [from dehydration] while activities involving quick reactions weren’t as affected .” Monotonous tests and tests requiring any kind of attention to detail were affected negatively as well.

The solution, it would seem, is to make sure you drink a lot of water every day, even when you are not so thirsty. Not really. You still have to limit yourself because drinking too much water can dilute your body’s healthy sodium and salt levels leading to hyponatremia and all of its symptoms. “In extreme cases, this can lead to swelling of the brain and even seizures .” Even if you don’t drink excessive amounts, drinking a lot of water at once is pointless, especially if you think it will last you all day. Mostly, it’s because your body auto-regulates, meaning it will find a way to get rid of any excess water within a few hours; at the most, your kidneys can only process three and a half to four cups per hour. So, how much should we be drinking and when should we drink it?

The average woman should be drinking about 9 cups a day while the average man should be drinking 13 .

Important times to drink water or to replenish water already lost are; when you wake up, it helps get your body going (think of warming your car engine before use during cold weather); before eating to rinse out any leftover tastes from your last meal and to moisten your stomach lining to prevent acidic foods from hurting your stomach; before and after exercising to replenish the water lost from sweating; when exposed to germs or an unclean environment to better help your body flush it all out before you get sick; when you are ill or tired, again, to help flush out germs and to rejuvenate yourself . Other than that, a good point of reference for if are getting enough water throughout the day is how often you pee; every two to three hours is a good sign.

If you have trouble remembering to hydrate, it’s recommended to leave yourself physical reminders such as sticky notes and phone alarms. Maybe make your wallpaper on your phone or computer a waterfall, or something equally appropriate ?

Natural Cleaners and What They Do

With the word ‘green’ getting used more and more when it comes to making everyday decisions and lifestyle choices, why not apply it to the way you clean? If green energy is about saving the air, earth, and water you share with everyone, then green cleaning is about saving yourself. It’s a more attainable and manageable effort than saving the world if you ask me. The best way to be ‘green’ in your cleaning? Using ‘natural’ products instead of chemicals.

Now you might already use a few of these, and some you might have only heard your grandparents talk about, but here are a few options: white vinegar, castile soap, natural salt, baking soda, borax, lemons, and essential oils. (1) And just what makes them ‘natural’? “The FDA refers to natural ingredients as ingredients extracted directly from plants or animal products as opposed to being produced synthetically.” If there are any chemical changes occurring, then they must be the type that can naturally occur with those items, or else they are no longer considered ‘natural’. (2)

White vinegar is typically made through the natural process of fermentation, with grain. It is then diluted with water. There is a higher percent of water in the white vinegars used in cooking, and a lower percent of water for those used in cleaning. White vinegar can be used on numerous household surfaces and not just in the kitchen. After doing the dishes and cleaning the countertops, you can move on to the rest of the house. After mopping the floors, and wiping down the windows and mirrors, you can even carry on to the bathroom. There you can scrub your showers, bathtubs and toilets, all with one product. And to top it off, if you managed to stain your clothes at any point during your cleaning, white vinegar can help remove those too. There are a few surfaces that are not compatible with this natural cleaner, such as certain rock countertops and wooden floors, but other than those few exceptions it’s a pretty effective cleaner. (3)

Castile soap, in both liquid and solid bar form, is only made with vegetable oils. Some of the biggest brands have coconut, olive and other varieties of oils including select nuts. Besides being a completely vegan product, castile soap is a real “grease-grabber”, making it effective at cleaning all your greasy needs such as oven hoods, pots and pans, and any other slippery hazards you may have. In addition to being used as laundry soap, it also cleans counters, floors, sinks, and most bathroom surfaces including yourself. Yes, you read that right, you can shower with castile soap. (4)

Natural salt is mined from the earth and is a gentle scrubbing agent in cleaning. Salt can also be mixed into other ingredients, such as vinegar, to boost both the cleaning and/or the freshening ability of said ingredients. So, for a basic scrub, mix lots of salt, with baking soda, dish soap, vegetable oil, etc. to form a paste (do your research to find out what exactly you need to mix with salt to get your desired results). Once you have your mixture(s), you are ready to clean so many different things. A little salt and scrub will work wonders on cleaning greasy pots and pans and stained cups. And if you’re old fashioned and like to hand wash your dishes occasionally, (or you have a lazy machine and actually have to rinse your dishes off a bit before putting them in the dishwasher like I do) a salt mixture down the drain will help prevent any grease buildup. (5)

Somebody forgot to use a coaster on your wooden tables…again? Have no fear. Remove those irritating water rings left behind with, you guessed it, a salt mixture! The fridge could use a breather? Use a salt scrub to clean the inside of your fridge as it both cleans and freshens. Your brass or copper pots, or glass coffee pot looking a tad dull or milky? Use a salt scrub to clean and prep for a good buffering later to get that shine back. On the laundry side of things, a salt scrub can help cure the stickiness that forms on the bottom of your clothes iron. A salt mixture can also help get out a number of different stains such as: perspiration, mildew, rust, blood and even the dreaded wine stain. (5)

Baking soda (or sodium bicarbonate) is a mineral, and like salt, can be mined from the earth naturally. Many people mine it and simply sell it in its natural state. But some go even further and refine it afterwards, with chemicals. If it isn’t refined, then baking soda makes an excellent ‘natural’ abrasive. Besides being mixed with salt like mentioned farther above, baking soda can be used to remove rust and tarnish from old metal and silverware. Baking soda is also effective enough to clean countertops, tiles and toilets, but still gentle enough to be used on your teeth in toothpastes and mouth washes. (6)

Borax (or sodium borate) is also a mineral, and again can be mined from the earth just like salt and baking soda. It can be used as both a household cleaner, as it can be used on multiple things, and a laundry booster. (7) What makes borax such a good cleaner, has to be its water softening properties. When borax is added to water, the calcium and magnesium ions are removed from the hard water and are replaced with sodium ions. The result is, in non-scientific terms, more effective cleaning; your detergents are better able to remove the dirt and oils from both dishes and clothing and your soaps feel even slicker. Therefore, you are able to use less detergent and soap to finish up your cleaning. (8) Some other uses for borax include being a fungicide and a bug killer. When a home or building needs a deep cleaning, being able to get rid of and prevent future mold and bug outbreaks is both helpful and appreciated. (7)

The most ‘natural’ cleaner of all can be found right in your own fridge; the common lemon. With a little salt, a lemon can be used to remove tough food scum off of dishes. With lemon juice, not only can you erase rust spots on knives and polish copper, you can also eliminate obnoxious stains and smells from all your plastic containers, wooden cutting boards, and butcher block countertops. (9) Essential oils are a ‘natural scent. The process of distillation using steam or water captures a plant’s taste and scent A more mechanical option is through cold pressing; essentially, pressing the plants really hard through a strainer. Both essential oils and our dear friend the lemon can be added to home brews to make a ‘natural’ air freshener or a scented ‘natural’ cleaner.

To wrap up, there are probably a few more DIY ‘natural’ cleaning solutions out there than this article covered. Before doing any of these ‘natural’ options, listed here or otherwise, a bit of research is required. Many of these ‘natural’ cleaners do not come with detailed instructions like their chemical cousins. The options discussed here all have their ‘do’s and don’ts’ you need to know in order to avoid causing irreparable damage to either your things, yourself or both. If these options are not as effective for you as they are made out to be, don’t be afraid to go back to chemical cleaners. Though if you really are trying to be as ‘green’ as you can in life, hopefully you can find another ‘natural’ solution that serves you better. Do what works best for you.

Save Your Food: Clean Your Microwave

Most times, a quick swipe of a wet paper towel is enough to keep your microwave tidy and clean. But when you can smell the last thing you microwaved even hours later, or the food you microwave comes out tasting like a medley of flavors that were not listed in the ingredients, it’s time for a deeper cleaning. Before you start, you need to unplug your microwave. While you are there, check the cord for any dirt or residue as it’s a potential fire hazard. (1)

The best part about cleaning your microwave is the fact that many of your choices are already in your home. And if you have read some of our past articles, they will most likely be familiar to you as well. A mixture of baking soda and water will make a paste you can spread over hardened residue to help loosen it; it also makes a good deodorizer. If you need a little extra cleaning power, you can microwave a bowl of water mixed with white vinegar to produce steam. Another steamy option is to microwave a halved lemon, cut-sides down, on a plate with a little water. Let either mixture sit in the microwave a few minutes before attempting to wipe everything up. Also, while you have them removed, be sure to wash and dry the turntable, and the wheeled bit it sits on, in your microwave. Be sure to use a wet cloth to wipe up any lingering baking soda. (2)

On to the not so natural solutions. You can microwave a bowl of water mixed with a little dish soap to help loosen residue. You can use a sponge dipped in a diluted window cleaner solution to wipe out your microwave too. Finally, you can use commercial cleaners to clean out your microwave, but it is recommended to use a fume-free variety and to leave the microwave open to vent for a few hours after you finish cleaning. Note, when you use any kind of chemical cleaner in your microwave, it is important to also wash it down with a rag soaked in clean water several times after the initial cleaning to make sure you get rid of all chemical traces. Besides being hazardous, it also makes your microwaved food taste funny. (2)

When wiping out the inside of your microwave, after using one of the solutions above, “you should never use pre-soaked scrubbing pads…because the loose particles will catch fire and explode.” (2) You should also never run the microwave with nothing inside in an attempt to get rid of any lingering residue. “When there’s nothing in the microwave to absorb the microwaves, the microwave can actually catch fire. At the very least, turning it on with nothing in there can damage the microwave.” (3) Instead, if you have a particularly stubborn spot, you can use a rag soaked with a little olive oil to help remove it. (2)

“To prolong the amount of time in between deep cleans, try adjusting your microwave to a lower power setting, particularly when heating up foods that are prone to splattering.” Or, if you want to make it even less complicated, you can simply cover your food with a microwave-safe cover, which are sold in stores, or with a paper towel or napkin. If splattering occurs anyway, at least it’ll be a small amount you’ll be able to wipe up easily with a napkin or paper towel. (1)

Remember at the beginning when we mentioned your microwave should not smell like previous meals? It should not smell like something is burning either; if it is, it may be time to get a new microwave and bypass cleaning it all together. Besides the burning smell, if your microwave: is smoking; is giving off sparks (without any metal involved); is making odd and/or loud sounds; is not heating your food properly or is taking longer than usual; has a door that doesn’t seal all the way (radiation leak hazard); has a keypad or buttons refusing to work; is over 10 years old (most are built to last that long); it may be time to get a new microwave. Luckily, microwaves are pretty affordable now: paying to get one fixed usually isn’t worth it. Plus, the technology and energy efficiency of microwaves is always getting better. Like a good car, if you maintain your microwave, it’ll run for as many years as it’s able. (4)

Boost Productivity With The Power of Music

Ever feel like you’re wasting away while the task you were set on finishing remains undone? Or you are working hard at it, but the task still seems to be going by at a snail’s pace? Even after trying the usual methods of jump starting and/or refreshing yourself with a break, a snack, or a little exercise, the task still stands tall? Good news: if you did not already know, there have been studies going on for decades proving how listening to music while you work can increase work productivity. The bad news? It doesn’t necessarily work for everyone. Here is what you can try to do, at work or at home, to help you get through different tasks.

First, classify what it is you are doing. Is it more of an involved task that requires intense focus such as reading, writing, or retaining new knowledge? Or is it more of a boring task with how repetitive and mundane it is? If it is a more active task, you can generally listen to any music you want, so long as it doesn’t have any lyrics. Music with lyrics tends to be distracting for a lot of people as it starts making your brain multitask breaking your focus between your task, and the words in the songs. Like how too much background chatter can be distracting, even when you are not actively trying to listen to it. On the other hand, the tasks with little variety actually benefit from listening to music with lyrics. The lyrics can provide a welcome, and harmless, distraction from the dull work being done. (1)

Next, you need to take into account how fast you should be doing your task. The tempo of the songs you choose can influence how quickly you work even if you are not really focusing on the music at all. Don’t pick something so slow you might be tempted to wind down or fall asleep. But at the same time, don’t pick a song so fast it makes you jittery and unable to focus before eventually burning out. Find a happy medium, or live dangerously and find music that is borderline too fast or too slow. What needs to be a solid in-between, is the volume you play the music at. As you can probably guess, playing music too quietly defeats the purpose of even having it. “Music played at a reasonable volume encourages creativity and abstract thinking. Turn it up too loud though and you won’t be able to hear yourself think.” (2)

Finally, you need to figure out if listening to music while completing tasks is actually helping you, or is only harming you. Through trial and error, if music helps you focus and get tasks completed quicker, good for you! Just know studies have found that music forced onto people without any say tends to be more distracting than music the individual has chosen themselves, or are open to hearing. So, playing music over the speakers for an entire office, or even an entire building, might not really be doing anyone any favors. Maybe it would be better to encourage individuals to listen to their own music at a reasonable volume to boost themselves while not bothering those that do better without music. “If someone is used to listening to music while working, it's often more beneficial than distracting. The reverse is true as well.” (3)

If you are one of the people that is distracted by music as it worsens your productivity, here are some options you can try before accepting your fate or being music-less while completing tasks. Will Tottle, a mental health expert, once said,“Two specific genres [of music] are the best overall for productivity: classical music and the sounds of nature.” Maybe the classical music wouldn’t be that much help to you, if music in general isn’t, but the sounds of nature could be: rivers rushing; birds chirping; wind whistling; thunderstorms; all of these and more can be a motivating background noise to improve work productivity. It’s not man-made music, and is a positive improvement from only having distracting, mindless chatter or car traffic as your background noise. If you are still determined to listen to music you enjoy while you work without it affecting your productivity negatively, you can always try to make a mix of songs you know by heart, or hear so often, you won’t be distracted listening to it. (4)

Even if we didn’t have scientists start and continue to do studies on music and its effect on productivity, individuals will always find out about the power of music. How many times have you noticed people listening to music while exercising, cleaning, studying, or working? Whether purposefully or accidentally, people will find out what works for them when it comes to music.

Ways To Kill It As You Clean: The Bug Edition

You stretch and wipe the sweat from your brow. The pleasant burn of your muscles a reminder of what you have just accomplished. You look around the room and smile as you exhale softly; you’re finally finished cleaning for the day. Suddenly, there is a flicker of movement from the side. You swallow harshly; Your eyes blown wide. Across from you scuttles every home-owners nightmare: a cockroach. All your hard work seems wasted now as the cockroach carries on his merry way, ignorant to your dilemma. As you grab the bug spray, you wonder: how can I stop this from happening again?

You are not alone. Many ask themselves this very question. As they should, because sadly that one bug is not alone either. In 2016, a team of entomologists did a study where they searched 50 homes throughout Raleigh, North Carolina. “Room to room, floor to ceiling, under shelves and behind knick-knacks, they grabbed every arthropod they could find…” What they found was shocking. Each home had between 32 and 211 species of bugs residing in them. The good news is that most were not pest species. Most were even invisible to the naked eye and can continue to live amongst us peacefully. As for the others, here are some ways you can barricade your home from these unwanted guests. (1)

Starting outside, the biggest repellent for mosquitoes is to make sure they don’t have anywhere to breed. Mosquitoes like standing water, so you need to drain places like your gutters, birdbaths and swimming pools. I have found that sometimes even trees can have patches of standing water among their above-ground roots. Wasps are repelled by the scent of fresh-cut herbs such as rosemary or mint. Hang tiny clusters of them where wasps tend to nest outside your home, and then hang some more in your families more high-traffic areas outside to prevent them from moving there instead. (2)

Moving into the home, to prevent flies, make sure your trashcans are tightly covered. Wash them occasionally, not just when a garbage bag leaks, and sprinkle a little borax on the inside, to keep the flies outside. For ants, sprinkle ground cinnamon or cloves around where you have found them coming in. In case some still manage to get in, use a mixture of white vinegar and water to frequently erase any trails they may leave for other ants to follow on your home’s floors and other surfaces. Silverfish are attracted to water. So, to get rid of them you need to fix any water leaks you have, and to seal all the openings around pipes, and holes in the walls you can find. Vacuum around the treated areas to get rid of any silverfish eggs that might have been laid. (2)

Like ants, spiders are repelled by strong scents. Make a mix of essential oil, water and liquid detergent in a spray bottle and apply weekly at your spider hot spots. Peppermint oil is the most suggested, but you can also use eucalyptus, citronella, lavender or tea tree oil. Weevils love to get into your pantry-stored foods. Rice and flour are some of their favorites. To keep them from spoiling your goods, place a bay leaf or a clove inside your storage containers and on the shelf around them. This is the safer way to protect your food from bugs instead of accidentally contaminating them with bug sprays. (3)

After all that cleaning and laying down bug barricades, you head off to bed. But before you do, just remember that dust mites are a thing; they like to eat skin flakes. Unfortunately, that means they are probably in your bedding. If you have a suspicion you have some unwanted bedmates, get ready to do some laundry. Mixing a little eucalyptus oil, or tea tree oil, with some laundry detergent in a bucket of water, soak the items before washing as usual. Anything unwashable, spray with the mixture and wipe clean. Now, your home should be mostly bug free. Stay diligent with these bug repellents, and clean regularly, and your home will surely sparkle.

NATHAN: Alright. Hello everybody! It's Nathan Peetz with Trinity Commercial Cleaning, and

joining me today is Cliff Hunnicutt with blueharbor bank. Cliff, thank you so much for joining us today.

CLIFF: Very good to be with you.

NATHAN: Thank you. Okay, so we'll start off with a fun one... okay, tell us a little bit about blueharbor bank; how you guys started and maybe some of the history with your cleaning companies. Did you guys do it in-house originally?

CHRIS: Okay, very good question. I have been with blueharbor six years. blueharbor is actually 11 and a half years old; we started right here in Mooresville. We are Mooresville's only community bank that's based right here in town. We're a bunch of bankers who just like to think we apply common sense to banking and we find solutions for our clients.

NATHAN: Yeah!

CLIFF: It doesn't hurt for me to add that we are one of the strongest banks our size in the entire state. We're proud of that.

We got a great track record and, uh, you know, it's a joy to get up and come to work every morning. Mooresville has got- oh, it used to be 22, 23 different banks. With all of the mergers and the buyouts, there are now 17. Out of 17 banks in town, we are number four in deposit share-

NATHAN: Fantastic.

CLIFF: ...and we don't have ATMs on every corner; we don't have three full branches, we got a branch here, branch downtown. You can name the three that are ahead of us- they're the three big boys- but it basically shows the community's embraced us.

NATHAN: Oh yeah.

CLIFF: And when it comes to cleaning: wow. You ask any banker about cleaning, and he's going to look at you and he's just gonna get a glazed-over look because, truthfully, most banks are going to farm their cleaning out to third parties.

NATHAN: Certainly.

CLIFF: The third parties are going to send somebody in, and you never know who's coming in-

NATHAN: Or when!

CLIFF: ...or when. You know, if you're there when they do come to clean, it doesn't take you long to realize it's almost somebody different from week to week, and the cleaning experience- I've been in banking 22 years- and I have never- and I will re-emphasize that word "never-" had a cleaning experience that I was satisfied with. That's probably a little on the strong side in one sense: you know, did they do a basic job: okay. But, you know, if you had a good cleaner in, it was only for a just week or a few weeks, and then it was, you know, a third party came along and, next thing you know, oh my gosh, they're coming in and emptying the trash and that's all they're doing.

NATHAN: Sounds like it didn't last very long.

CLIFF: It did not last. It was not satisfactory and, honestly, you were almost embarrassed for people; almost embarrassed for people to walk in the branch-

NATHAN: Yeah.

CLIFF: ...the dust that, you know, you could write your name on the desk. The tellers would leave little notes on their computers: "please clean this station," and even then, you wouldn't get anything done. It's sad.

NATHAN: Great. So that's- that's not great, that's awful! I mean-

CLIFF: Yeah.

NATHAN: ...that that's been your experience. Has that changed with- when Trinity's come in?

CLIFF: Let me just tell you: from the first day, you guys came in there was a huge difference and that difference- this is the really sweet part of it- has been consistent from day one. You came in and did a thorough job; got this place just, I mean- when we moved into the new building is when we hired you guys.

NATHAN: Yeah, and it's a beautiful new building! I love it.

CLIFF: ...and we love it. I mean, face it: you know, where I was before, I didn't have any windows. I got two walls of windows now; love to come to work every day. But it's a pleasure to come in and, even if I have a client walk in here with me first thing in the morning, I know that this office is going to be an absolute top shape when it comes to how clean it is. The ladies out on the line: never had a complaint, when it used to be almost a daily routine. Everybody in this bank appreciates what you do, and let me tell you, it's a pretty decent sized building. We haven't seen turnover; you know, somebody different every time the door opens and somebody walking in with a mop and they're looking, you know, like, "Well, what are we supposed to do here?" You come in, you know what needs to be done, you know? My desk is always clean, and yet I can't tell whether things been moved, so we couldn't be happier, Nathan, we really couldn't, and, you know, I recommended you to several folks and that will continue because of the job that you do .

NATHAN: We've been very happy banking with you guys. You guys are on the cutting edge

CLIFF: Well hey, we appreciate that too.

NATHAN: I've been impressed with everything I've seen yeah I mean small example is the QuickBooks integration. I didn't realize you guys were on top of that! I thought: little community bank maybe there're behind the times a little bit. Not at all! I was dead wrong.

CLIFF: You know, I started my career with a big bank. Yeah, and when I made the move to a community bank- like you, I thought, "Okay, I'm taking a step back into the Dark Ages." I got to the community bank, and all of a sudden, I'm thinking: "Man, the software- the programs I had on my computer- where's this been all my life!?"

NATHAN: Yeah!

CLIFF: And it didn't take long for somebody to explain to me: well, you know when you got four, six, eight, a dozen branches or whatever it may be, you can roll out the latest and the greatest in a very cost-efficient way, whereas if you got a hundred or even a thousand branches- oh my gosh! a roll out of anything new only happens every-Lord-knows-how-many-years; so, we're able to stay on top of things internally, but we're able to provide top-of-the-line technology to our customers as well, and that asset, that's huge.

NATHAN: Absolutely.

CLIFF: You bet. It's all about relationships with us at blueharbor-

NATHAN: Yeah.

CLIFF: ...and I can just tell you we got a relationship with Trinity that we appreciate.

NATHAN: Yeah, and we appreciate it too: we're partners!

CHRIS: Hello Whystle family! We are joined by a wonderful business owner in the greater-greater Charlotte area- I will let him tell you about himself because he's gonna do a much better job than I will- please, go ahead Brian.

BRIAN: Yeah, I don't know if I'll end up doing a better job at this than you, but I'll give it a shot. My name is Brian. I'm the owner, with my wife, of Trinity Commercial Cleaning in Mooresville, North Carolina- so still in the Charlotte area, as you say- still get to enjoy the freedom of Charlotte, but uh, have to put up with all the traffic you all have to put up with and everything- but um, yeah, we're a commercial cleaning company in Mooresville and just absolutely love it, so.

CHRIS: That's awesome. So I guess we can just dive right in... so what made you decide to get into the cleaning industry in general?

BRIAN: One of our core values is be honest, so I will be very honest: I did not want to get into this industry. The previous owner spent about two years talking me into buying this business, and I think part of it was due to fear- um, I had never owned a business before and, uh, I didn't know much about the cleaning industry- but I kept thinking: well, I don't really want to scrub toilets the rest of my life- but he saw something in me, and he didn't want to sell the business to just anybody, I guess, so he kept at it- for two years, you know! -and finally he said, "Well, I'll owner finance it," and I'm like well, fine, you know, I mean, I'll take it, and I'm so glad I did because, um, it's uh, it's a humble industry, but that's the incredible thing- because it's an industry that you really get to serve people behind the scenes and- you know, nobody knows about it. So, I feel like it's good for me that I'm not in the spotlight, but I'm still able to serve people.

CHRIS: Yeah.

BRIAN: What about you? What got you into it?

CHRIS: Yeah, so, I had been working management consulting for a couple of years and so I was traveling every week, getting on a plane Monday, coming back Thursday- um, and the last thing I- or I wanted my fiancé to have to do whenever I was gone or when we got back home for the 72-hour window that I had- was clean our place. So, we were trying desperately to find a cleaner to come clean our place. Uh, I went on Groupon: the first company I went after, they were actually a fake company, and they were banking on people not getting refunds. The second company-

BRIAN: What?! That's crazy!

CHRIS: Yeah! The second company went out of business after canceling on me twice, and then the third company never called me back or sent me any confirmation that they were gonna come or not. Um, and so I thought: there has to be an easier way to do this and then I started-

BRIAN: I heard three strikes right away with companies in your area- just a quick search, and the first three you found were just... miserable.

CHRIS: Right, and it took a total of three weeks to figure this out- that this is just not going to be as easy as I thought it was. And then I came looking around to see if I could find prices and any relevant information that is transparent: and I couldn't. I found long estimate processes; I found lengthy forms; I found, you know- really challenging to book services, and all I wanted was to be able to go on my phone and make a couple clicks and know when my cleaner was coming.

BRIAN: This is 2019, right? You know?

CHRIS: You would hope that this is a possible thing, so I started Whystle, and that's kind of exactly what we do. We tell prices completely upfront there's no kind of hidden costs or fees. Everything you need to know, you can find either on the app or the online booking form- and it's meant to be as simple as possible to where, as a lot of our customers like, they don't even have to talk to anyone if they don't want to. Today the kind of norm is that everyone wants to hop on the phone and talk, but I guess I'm a little old school like that, but... heh.

BRIAN: That's awesome though! You know, you found, I mean- that's where so many people become successful is, they find a need and they have a frustration because they can't fill that need, so they go out and say, "Well, I'm gonna fill it," so good on you for for finding a need and saying, "You know what, I can make this work."

CHRIS: Yep, yeah. That was the goal.

BRIAN: That's what this industry needs is people that say, "Look, we're in 2019! Let's get with the program and let's make it work and let's serve people."

CHRIS: Right! And let's serve people in a way that doesn't make them feel cheated or confused or, you know, slighted in any way.

BRIAN: Yeah, transparency- that's awesome.

CHRIS: Yeah. So, how long have you been in business? I don't know if you went to that before... I might have missed it

BRIAN: Ah, great question. I don't know if I mentioned it before or not, but the business was established April 2009. I bought it from Scott, a gentleman I just respect so much, in July 2016, so I'm three years in. I'm still a baby in the business world, you know, but yeah, three years and just absolutely loving it. We've been growing like crazy and have incredible clients that I really enjoy working with, and just striving to be the the premier cleaning company in the Mooresville area. Um, my whole goal is to change the industry and it sounds like that's exactly what you're wanting to do as well. I want to bring a professionalism and a freshness to the industry and I want people to- see, I'm commercial whereas you're residential- I want people that have worked so hard to build a business like I have to go home at the end of the day and not have to worry about it; come in the next day and it's like man, it's clean, I don't have to follow up with a cleaning company and figure out, "Hey, were you guys even here or what did you do? You know, I'm paying for something, but I don't know what the heck I'm paying for, I'm just wasting my-" you know, so I'm trying to change all that and have that transparency as well, you know, exactly like what you're doing, so.

CHRIS: Yeah, that's spot-on. I mean, I'm trying to just make it simple for people and I know how much I value my time. I value kind of the time that I have that's away from whatever I do for my work-

BRIAN: Sure.

CHRIS: ...and the last thing that I wanted to worry about was having to clean and having to kind of keep my space in order, and I know that a lot of other people view, value their time just as much because, you know, in 2019 we all work really hard; we all have, you know, lives outside of our jobs, but the things that detract away from them, I would rather pay for those services so that I don't have to waste my time doing them.

BRIAN: And make it easy to pay for those services-

CHRIS: Right!

BRIAN: ...not just, oh I'm gonna take three weeks and three companies to finally figure out how I can pay for this service. No! I want three minutes and three clicks, you know?

CHRIS: Yeah! That's exactly right. I mean, that's spot-on, um. Now, I've been a business- you said you were a baby- I've been in business for about six months, so I'm like a newborn-

BRIAN: There you go! I'm a toddler, then, whatever.

CHRIS: ...you're a toddler, I'm a newborn, um, but that being said, we're growing fast in Charlotte as well, and that's- similar goal is to be the company that comes in and really revolutionizes what residential cleaning means. Um, and I also, another kind of point I want to make is that most cleaning companies I've found don't necessarily give the people who live in apartment complexes or condominiums the time of day, um, because they think that all the money is out in the suburbs, and they think that those are the people who deserve to be served because you can always count on them- which is not necessarily true, by the way-

BRIAN: Sure.

CHRIS: ...but what I want to give is, those people that live in an apartment complex, they deserve the same exact thing as the people who live out in the suburbs. There's no reason why you shouldn't be able to get your apartment cleaned if you want to. Um, and a lot of cleaning companies won't even talk- they don't, they'll literally, explicitly say, "We do not do apartment complexes," which-

BRIAN: Really?!

CHRIS: ...blows my mind. Yes, I've found that in Charlotte.

BRIAN: That's incredible. You know, wow, I just, I've never heard that before and so it really shocks me, because I've always had a can-do attitude or, like one of our other core values, make it happen, you know, I just make it happen, just do it. I don't understand this mentality of, you know, we can't, oh, we don't do apartment complexes, or we only do multimillion-dollar houses and, you know, I mean, there's so many other people to serve and-

CHRIS: Yep.

BRIAN: ...you know, there's people that, like, in this country, people work so hard: they need more freedom. They need to just step away from work to address their lives, and so they don't need to come home and keep working, and that's what you're trying to do is take all this stress out of people's lives as a business owner. And, yeah, you've only been at six months, but you've got an incredible picture in your mind of how to alleviate stress from people's lives and make their life better, and you know, there's so many businesses in the country that are all about like, "Just give us money and you're not gonna get anything in return." And you're like, "Let me help you make your life better; let me take stress away; let me clean for you so you can come into a home at the end of the work day and sit down and just be like, 'I'm gonna crack a beer,'" or whatever, ya know?

CHRIS: Yeah, no, that's a hundred percent right, and that's- it's funny, you keep mentioning core values, which I love. Something, one of our core values is own your work, right? So it's very important for us to be accountable and to make sure that you do what you say you're gonna do. We're not here to take your money and, on top of that, we're pretty affordable because we want everyone to have access to this. You shouldn't have to have a fat wallet to make sure that your place stays clean and owning your work and actually doing what you say you're gonna do is the value that we should provide as companies. Now, I agree not every company follows that same maxim, but that's important to me and so that's what we try to strive to do.

BRIAN: Sure. Well, hopefully soon you'll be big enough you can expand into Mooresville. I'm gonna keep doing commercial, you do residential, and hopefully by then I'll, uh, have somebody- I own a cleaning company, and the last thing I want to do is come home at the end of the day and clean! You know, it's like the cobbler has no shoes, you know?

CHRIS: Right!

BRIAN: Cleaning at the end of the day- it's my industry, so yeah hurry up and get up here, too!

CHRIS: Okay! I'll do my best. So, we talked a little bit about it, but can you explain a little bit what it means to you to be a business owner?

BRIAN: Sure. Um, that's a really great question, and, you know, you hear all these things that, you know, a boss kind of has people carry him, and a leader supports people, and I just, I love that imagery because, being a business owner has to be service to others; it has to. I was in the Air Force, and one of the Air Force core values was service before self. You know, so they have integrity first, excellence in all we do, and service before self, and I think that the Air Force did a really good job in instilling that in me so, with my clients, you know, since I'm new at cleaning, by the time I come in, they've been through five or six companies- cleaning companies- and they don't want to talk to another cleaning company. They're like, "You all are all the same: you're just... ah!!" You know, and there's so much frustration and so I just- I want to serve them. I want to take that pain away from them and say, "Look, you know, I truly believe that I can- with my employees- can come in and solve that pain and frustration that you've had with the cleaning industry and to the point where you will love us and never want another cleaning company," so first and foremost, you know, serving clients: serving them well. But, you know, I'm not gonna take on clients that walk all over me, you know? I want them to appreciate- like, treat us like we're human beings, you know, and we will do everything possible to serve you and take care of your space. But as a business owner, I have the unique privilege of also serving my employees. You know I- when it comes to this business, I'm more worthless than my employees. They're the ones that are in the face of the business; they're the ones going out doing the actual work, so I have to find really good employees, you know, um, 'cause they're the ones that make it happen. And so, I make it very difficult to to get into my company. You know, we have a 3-step hiring process, and you and I have talked about this a lot: you've got the same hiring process, you know, the group interview; the one-on-one interview; the training interview, because we have the same business coach that is specific for cleaning companies-

CHRIS: Yeah.

BRIAN: ...and he explained that, and I love it because I'm not a daycare; I'm a cleaning company.

CHRIS: Right.

BRIAN: I send people into businesses after hours with alarm codes and keys with nobody around. I've got really good people, and if I get really good people, I have to take care of them to keep them around, so I have to serve them as well. But what about you? You know, I want to hear your story and your thoughts on it.

CHRIS: Yeah. I mean, you hit the nail on the head with all of your points there, and the one that I'm gonna focus on first is people, right? And I know that we are in this business to serve customers and that is extremely valuable to me and important, but I think that, above everything else, it's so vital that we're serving our employees, because our employees are the heart and soul of our business, right? My employees: I certainly couldn't do this without them. This company wouldn't exist without these employees. They bust their butts day in and day out and really work to serve customers, and because of that, it's so important to find a good core values match with those employees; you're talking about this multi-step process- I mean, we have employees who have other jobs, but they choose to keep this job because one, it's flexible hours; two, they know that they've got a core values match with me; and three, it allows them to, you know, make that extra money on the side of their other jobs. Now, they have flex to come up and make more money here, but they choose to do this even though they've got other things going on in their life because we create an environment that is very conducive to what they believe deep down, right? And that's something that's really important to me. Serving the customers, I think you set a point, you kind of, you hinted on it- is that, you know, not every customer is your customer.

BRIAN: Sure.

CHRIS: ...you people, we're gonna have a mutual level of respect with you and make sure that everyone is kind of doing their part- and from a customer perspective, it's really just that you treat us like people and not like, you know, the just "worker person" who's-handling-my-dirty-work type of deal. So it's very important to me- and important to my employees- that we're all treated with respect, but we will go above and beyond to make sure that we do everything in our power to give you an excellent experience and go above and beyond. On top of that, being a business owner just means being able to give back to the community. We recently did a blood drive in combination with a local- it's kind of a pop shop, so they they sell beer and so they've got a bar there- but like them, in Great Lakes Brewery, we had a goal- I think of 10 units for this mobile blood drive- and we got something like 20 units. We ran out of supplies to get more people. We had more people who wanted to give blood and we were told that that blood would save 48 lives, which is just an amazing feeling to me, that we got to give back in the community in that way, and I'm looking to do more and more events that are community-based and give back to the community. Um, later this month, we've got a pups and pints event where we'll bring out puppies from the Humane Society- they've got a staycation program where we can bring dogs there and they have a chance to be adopted by the residents of that apartment complex- so I want these dogs to find a home. I care about the dogs and they're very important to me, so I want to help give back to them. So, being a business owner is very multifaceted. There's a lot of people to serve and whatever we can do to make sure that we are serving those people, that's what it means to me- that's what's important.

BRIAN: You know, I want to talk about something real quick that really bothers me. You and I are both kind of young guys, you know, and we're both business owners-

CHRIS: Yeah.

BRIAN: ...and I feel like our generation gets kind of looked down on a lot or made fun of a lot. But you know as well as I do: first off, business ownership is hard work! I mean, it's so hard where you don't clock out after 40 hours. I mean. it's just like it's constant, you know? Whenever there's an issue, it's you, you know? I don't at 4 o'clock get to put in my time card, "All right well I'm off; the boss can figure it out:" I am the boss. But just like what you're saying is still incredible, and I think people really need to know that hey, we're- yeah, we're a younger generation, but you know, we're trying to do what's right; we want to serve our clients; we want to serve our employees; we want to serve our community. Like-

CHRIS: Yeah.

BRIAN: ...what more can you want out of a business owner?! That's what they need to do: is look at doing all the things and focusing on the other person, and you, so often, they're like all, "Millennials are stuck in their cell phone or so self-centered," and stuff. Where was one self-centered word you talked about just now!?

CHRIS: Right!

BRIAN: So, anyway, I'll get off my soapbox now.

CHRIS: No, you're a hundred percent right, and I think do we get the rap for, like you said, being on our phones and being lazy, and, you know, not really caring enough about the things going on around us; just really focused on what we can do to help ourselves, and I know personally lots of other Millennials right? That don't fit in that category, that stereotype that people tend to put us in and that's something that, you know, I'm striving to go completely against, cuz that's just not who I am, right? My generation doesn't define me or what other generations think of my generation doesn't define me-

BRIAN: Sure.

CHRIS: ...so I'm doing everything I can to knock that trend and buck it because, uh-

BRIAN: Yeah! You're knocking it out of the park; you're doing it man!

CHRIS: Do what?

BRIAN: I said you're doing it man! Keep going! That's awesome- I'm not alone!

CHRIS: Okay, awesome! So you've talked a lot about it we're just gonna probably briefly go on this question, but what makes your company special?

BRIAN: Great question. I mean, first off, it's the quality of employees. I pay well above industry standard because I don't want to get rich- I don't- that would not be good for me, I don't need to be a rich person- not knocking rich people, there's plenty of incredible people that have a lot of money- but I don't want to get too focused on material goods, which I feel like I could tend to do. So, you know, I want to make sure I give that money to my employees, because they're out there working so hard. Now, I'm not willing to work for minimum wage. I'm not even going to work for 10 or $12 an hour and so, I'm not gonna ask other people to do that. I will pay a living wage to my employees, and so that's one thing that makes our business unique.

Um, secondarily, I put a lot of effort into finding good people. You know, because I'm gonna take care of them, and so I'm not gonna waste money on a horrible person that's just calling in sick all the time- or stealing stuff- or breaking things and not telling me about it so we can replace it- or locking keys, or leaving the building unlocked; all of those issues: I'm not gonna pay somebody that does that stuff, you know? And so we have a licensed private investigator that runs, um, our background checks and they're very, very extensive, um... the potential employee, they sign a release form that says we can see, like, speeding tickets, arrest records, everything, because I have to know who I'm sending into a business after-hours, you know, and it's- if I don't trust them going into my own home, I'm not gonna trust them going into somebody's business, and so all of my people: I trust them to come into my own home, you know. I am a veteran of the Air Force, so I try to use all those values and bring those into business as well and then, um, you know, a couple other things that make us unique is, I think, a fresh mindset. You know, that we're trying to change the industry, you know, and bring a fresh professionalism to it.

We want to do what we say we're gonna do and so we have a satisfaction guarantee that if we do not meet or exceed your expectations every month, then lunch is on us!

I don't lock people into a yearly contract. I hate legal language! I'm not gonna hide behind a lawyer. I want to look somebody in the eye and shake their hand and say, "This is what I'm gonna do," so, they sign a quote and for commercial cleaning: like, that's unheard of! You sign a quote and that's it: this is, "I'll agree to pay you this every month that we want to keep you around," and then we make it very easy for them to kick us to the curb. So, we know we have to re-earn their business every single month, you know? It's not something that's guaranteed to us. If you want money, you have to work for that money. So, you know, that's what we're doing, so, anyway- that's what, like, my mindset of what I'm trying to do to make my business unique and make us stand out. I don't know what my competitors do in the area: I don't care what they do. I want to figure out: what do our customers want us to do? How can we serve our customers? How do they want us to serve them?

CHRIS: Right.

BRIAN: ...you know, and that's what I'm trying to to discover, and I'm spending so much time trying to listen to people, so if anybody out there listening has advice on what you want from a commercial cleaning company: please let me know, because I don't have it all figured out, you know? I want to, but, you know, I got to learn from other people as well.

CHRIS: Yeah! I will. I love that last point is the idea that this is flexible, this is pliable, because we're trying to grow, we're trying to be as best we possibly can, and we're humble enough to admit the fact that we don't have it all figured out, right?

BRIAN: Right.

CHRIS ...that is something that I hold as, you know, a deep value of my own is that, you know: I'm constantly growing; this business is constantly growing; we are constantly learning things and learning what the customer needs and learning how to better support the customer through feedback, and so I tell all of my customers upfront, "Look, I want you to be brutally honest with me: if anything doesn't go right, or you'd like us to do anything differently: tell us upfront! We will fix it. This is not something where these are our Terms of Service you sign them and now you are obligated to follow them." Like, no! None of that crap. We have a Terms of Service page, but that's to protect employees; that's not to lock you into anything that is very airtight. We don't do contracts; we don't require you to do recurring cleanings. If you want to do one-time and just test us out: by all means, not gonna stop you. I know a lot of other cleaning companies will not push, but not necessarily allow you, to just do a one-time cleaning; they may have a test cleaning, but there's the expectation that you will follow up and sign some type of contract for recurring services.

BRIAN: We don't do one-time cleans so, you know, but I'm in the commercial space-

CHRIS: Yeah, that's a different industry. I mean, it makes sense.

BRIAN: No! I like your offering. Something I don't even offer, you know? This- you're listening to what customers need, you know, so-

CHRIS: Yeah.

BRIAN: ...there's times I've woken up in the morning and thought, man, I wish I'd have gotten a cleaning company after last night, you know-

CHRIS: Yeah! I look around my apartment sometimes... I'm like, "Well, I own a cleaning company, and this needs some work."

BRIAN: Right! We're human: that's what it boils down to. We're two guys owning their own businesses that are trying to to do the best we can. We don't want to be lazy, and we want to do a good job.

CHRIS: Yeah. We want to serve people and make sure that they know that they can count on us, and if they ever feel like they can't, then they let us know so that we can fix it, right?

BRIAN: Right.

CHRIS: Um-

BRIAN: That's how this all came about, you know? It's how you and I met each other. You would think like, whoa, you own a cleaning company, and I own a cleaning company in Charlotte: why in the heck are you guys hanging out and talking?

CHRIS: Yeah.

BRIAN: It's because we want to serve the customer. You know, it's not like, well, like, I've got to get every little piece of the market share, you know, I want to help you, you know, you, you're helping me, and it's all about: we want to get better so we can serve the customer, so.

CHRIS: Yeah. I'm with you. I'm a big fan of community over competition. I think that there is more than enough of the pie to go around for everyone. It is literally, physically impossible for anyone, or even a couple of cleaning companies, to own all of the market-

BRIAN: Yeah.

CHRIS: ...it's physically impossible right?

BRIAN: If you fail and don't do a good job, then you ...

CHRIS: ...exactly. There's only so many people and there's only so- there's a lot of work to go around, right? So, I'm not- I will talk to any cleaning company about anything we do and be very open and transparent, because I'm not here to to crush anyone, right? I'm here to serve the people of Charlotte in the best way possible. And if that means taking advice from a different cleaning company, or if that means that another cleaning company takes something I do, I can't say they're gonna do it as well, but they will be serving the same customer, so it's okay.

BRIAN: Sure, sure. Yeah, that's- at the end of the day, you know, that's why Carmax is so incredible is: they listen to what people want. And so, we, we're both just trying to do the same thing. Look, you want somebody that shows up when they say they're gonna show up that does what they say they're gonna do for the price that they said they would charge me.

CHRIS: Right

BRIAN: You know. That's- like, my gosh that's all it is, you know?

CHRIS: Yeah! Cleaning is so simple, yet so many companies just fail to recognize that simple baseline: it should be easy, but...

BRIAN: Right! Just do what you say you're going to do when you say you're going to do it: bam, end of conversation.

CHRIS: Yeah. Well, again, we're all human I guess, right?

BRIAN: No, I fail too. I get it. You know, I come up short, and that's why we have a satisfaction guarantee: because if we come up short, I want to know about it and I want to make it right, so.

CHRIS: Yeah. We've got a satisfaction guarantee as well- we've kind of got two- the first one is, and this is kind of more of a preference base as opposed to a- you know, what one customer needs- so one of the satisfaction guarantees is, you know, if we ever don't make you happy, even once, movies for you and your family are on us.

BRIAN: Wow, okay!

CHRIS: Another satisfaction guarantee- and this is geared more towards, you know, single people who live in apartment complexes: if you're not satisfied with our service, we'll clean up before and after your next party. Now...

BRIAN: Hoo!

CHRIS: Yeah, that one's a little more specific, but we have owned up to that whenever we needed to.

BRIAN: Do you feel like people take advantage of that, though? I mean, you know, that's a good question because, hey I like free lunch, so you know I was- when I first started mine- I'm like, man, I'm worried people are gonna say, "Hey, I forgot my lunch money today- you didn't clean, sir." You know. But it doesn't happen with us. I mean people, they see that we're really trying to put our money where our mouth is, and they don't all take advantage. Of course, we try to make sure they are never unhappy as well, you know, but in three years, I've had five times that I've had to use that satisfaction guarantee, which is unbelievable, you know. What about you?

CHRIS: Just the fact that you have one, right, sets you apart from so many other companies: that you actually have one and willing to own up to it, right? The whole thing of you do what you say you're gonna do, right?

BRIAN: Right.

CHRIS: But what I find is that, you have a good customer fit, right? They very rarely take advantage of it because they'd rather just work it out with you. Now, we will go ahead and do it anyways as soon as there's any kind of hint of, uh, unhappiness or any kind of disgruntled us with whatever we've done- we'll go ahead and just do it anyways without the customer asking, because that's the way to do it. They didn't ask for it. The people who are good customers of ours? They won't ask for it. Now, if they do, I've got nothing against that: we've got a guarantee for a reason, and we're gonna make sure that things are more than right.

BRIAN: Right.

CHRIS: It's not about making things right: it's about making things better than right.

BRIAN: Sure.

CHRIS: Um, so yeah, no, I find that people don't necessarily take advantage of it.

BRIAN: That's awesome.

CHRIS: ...which is great. I mean that must mean that-

BRIAN: There are good people in world.

CHRIS: ...when you just don't, they just don't use it, but.

BRIAN: Yeah. Well, no, I mean, I truly believe, and I think you and I have talked about this in the past: that I refuse to believe that the world is full of bad people. Let's- you hear that all the time, like all the world is going downhill, and no! I- the world is full of good people, and I see them every day in this business with clients and employees and meeting you and your company, you know? Don't tell me that: don't tell me the world is full of bad people. Yes, there's bad in the world, there's people that are up to no good, but there's more good people that are trying to just live their life, have a great life, have a clean apartment- have a clean business, you know? Um, yeah, so.

CHRIS: I'm with you a hundred percent. I mean, I always try to see the good in people before, and give them as many opportunities to kind of affirm that good as opposed to going with the opposite perspective.

BRIAN: Sure.

CHRIS: ...I would hope that people give me the same benefit of the doubt, so I prefer to treat others as they would treat me. Now, of course that doesn't always work out, and of course, sometimes I get burned, but-

BRIAN: Yeah, that's like-

CHRIS: Right.

BRIAN: ...as long as you're not the one out there burning people, you know?

CHRIS: Exactly, exactly.

Okay, we've gone for a minute here. Do you have any, uh, you have any other last second kind of words of advice or tips or tricks or anything for the listeners of this pod- it's not a podcast- Facebook Live?

BRIAN: Uh, yeah. Sorry for taking up so much time. I just, I'm really passionate in the business and hearing your side of the story as well, so I could talk forever, you know? But I guess the biggest thing is: whether you are looking for a commercial cleaning company in the Mooresville area, or a residential cleaning company in the South Charlotte area- make sure you find somebody that really serves your needs. I don't- I would prefer that you all use me, obviously, in the commercial area, but if you don't, that's okay- as long as you find a company that does what they say they're gonna do for a reasonable price, you know? I mean, we are more expensive in our area, but that's because I pay my employees well- and we do what we say we're gonna do, which costs more, you know? So that's the advice I would give is: if you're in a contract with the cleaning company, and you're miserable, and it's making your life miserable: why? Get out! There's people that really want to earn your business; they're hungry for your business, and they want to serve you: let those people serve you. And if you got to go through a couple companies before you find us: I get it, but we're here waiting, you know?

CHRIS: That's perfect! Okay, so one last time, where can the people find you?

BRIAN: What about you? Last tips or tricks or anything?

CHRIS: Yeah! I mean, similar to you, I may not be the best fit for everyone, and I'm okay with that. If you find somebody else that you prefer to work with, then as long as you find somebody who is consistently meeting your needs and is going above and beyond for you, and it's- you feel that you are being very fairly served and not, you know, gouged on prices, then by all means: stay with that person, keep that person. They are not as easy to find as you would think, in my experience, so stay with them, right? But if you're disgruntled with your cleaning company and, you know, you want to try something different, something that is maybe a little bit different than the traditional way of hiring a cleaning company, but-

BRIAN: Easier to hire?

CHRIS: Easier to hire; you know, possibly more straightforward- less, you know, shady or at least, less confusing, more transparent- then reach out to me. You can- you know where to find me. BLEACH: THE GOOD AND THE BAD

The notion of bleaching has been around since the Egyptians of 5000 B.C. Though, at that point in time, all they could really do was whiten their clothing and linen by washing, and leaving them out in the sun. Throughout history, sometimes the bleaching process would take hours, sometimes even stretching into weeks. Following the next few centuries, it went from using pure sunlight, to soaking the items in a wood ash and water solution before leaving them in the sun to bleach. Sour milk was added to the wood ash water solution at one time to lessen the harsh effects of bleaching on the desired materials. Even farther in the future, the discovery of various other chemicals, such as chlorine, eventually replaced the less efficient ingredients in known bleaching solutions, or helped speed up the bleaching process. (1)

Finally, in 1913, sodium hypochlorite bleach was being produced in bulk to laundry and water companies through a process developed an entire century earlier. As it was the 20th century, when electricity started getting cheaper and therefore making production cheaper, bleach was eventually offered to the common, everyday people. (1) This was fortunate as bleach was apparently a huge help during WWII. Bleach was heavily used during the war by the US as it was able to, “disinfect wounds, neutralize enemy gases and purify water,” making it so coveted, that it ended up being rationed to the American people. (2)

As the bleaching process went from completely natural, to mostly chemical, bleaching gained the capacity to disinfect as well as remove stains, not just whiten clothes and linen. But the big question remains: is today’s bleach safe? Strangely (not really), I was unable to find any resources that claimed bleach to be completely safe. On the other hand, there were plenty to choose from when looking for reasons why bleach is dangerous. The most neutral resource I found admitted that while bleach can be hazardous, if the proper safety precautions and directions on the labels are followed, bleach is fairly safe to use.

Properly diluted bleach should be used lightly in cleaning (with gloves) as it is a disinfectant, not a cleaner. That is to say, it will kill germs, but it cannot remove dirt; dirt actually lowers the effectiveness of bleach. That explains why you still need to add laundry soap to the washer even when you are using bleach. Speaking of laundry, if you avoid certain materials such as, “spandex, wool, silk, mohair or leather,” read the labels on your clothes, and do a test spot on a concealed part of your clothing, you can determine which of your clothes are safe to bleach in the wash. (3)

Besides laundry and removing stains, bleach is good a few other things. Adding a bit of bleach to the water in the vase somehow preserves your cut flowers longer, as well as keeping anything nasty from growing in the stagnant water. Allowing a bleach mixture to sit a bit before scrubbing away at tile grout can help get it looking new again. A diluted solution of bleach is helpful in the removal of mold or mildew from places such as the bathtub or your window panes. Using bleach to clean toilets is self-explanatory, and cleaning plastic toys for children by soaking them in bleach water is safe if you make sure they are completely dry before returning them to their proper place. There are more things you can sanitize bleach with but I felt these inclusions were a good mix of obviously, maybe I’ll try that, and interesting. (4)

On the other hand, you should never use bleach to clean: wooden surfaces, metal, stone, or food items. Wood and stone are really porous and so the bleach has trouble not only getting into these materials, but also back out to properly and safely sanitize. Even though it is tempting, I’m afraid that means you should not be using bleach on your (raw) meat cutting boards. As for metals, most bleach-based cleaners are not designed to clean them as most bleach ingredients act as oxidants that can oxidize and corrode metal surfaces. You should also never mix bleach with other chemicals, purposely or accidentally (such as when the other chemical may still be lingering on the surface you plan to use the bleach). As we discussed briefly in a previous article , it will cause the formation of a toxic gas that is very hazardous to your health. And while the food processing industry uses bleach to clean the produce it handles, average citizens are rarely able to get bleach diluted to a level safe enough to use themselves on a daily basis. (5)

Some more concerns people have with bleach are how it affects children and pets (not to mention yourself). After letting things washed with bleach dry completely, they can still give off fumes that are a risk for both you and your children’s lungs. Studies have shown that homes that use bleach products have kids that are more likely to be afflicted with respiratory illnesses and have higher instances of asthma and allergies. As for your pets, while they will avoid actual bleach, they have a bigger risk of accidentally ingesting some residual bleach off their fur after laying or walking on surfaces you have cleaned with it. The worst-case scenario for bleach poisoning is death. Just using bleach in general is a great risk to your health. It can irritate your eyes, nose, lungs and skin in various degrees. If you survive using bleach, you are poisoning the environment. When bleach eventually ends up in the water supply, it combines with any other chemicals that may be there, causing any number of toxins to form. Without any resistance, the toxins are able to weaken and or destroy any wildlife it reaches. Many bird and fish species have lost numbers due to this issue. (6)

To combat these health issue concerns, I would recommend making sure to wear protective gear such as gloves and googles while handling bleach and to ventilate extremely well after you are done cleaning. Maybe even try to wash away any excess bleach, or try to eliminate some of the fumes by washing the items/surfaces with soap and water again. One could even try to leave the bleached items outside a bit to air out; or even get themselves outside more often to clear their lungs (I saw an ad recently that stated that at times, our homes can have very poor air quality). As for the environment damage, there is not much to do except try to use less bleach or don’t use any at all. As a matter of fact, here are some safer and effective alternatives to bleach: baking soda and vinegar, lemon juice, cola, newspaper, and tea tree oil. (7)

So, in conclusion, I guess bleach is as safe as you deem it to be. Sure, it has its vices, but what doesn’t?

Setting Up a Security System

Whether you are updating, or starting from scratch, building security is a must in this day and age. Building security’s greatest purpose is to discourage thievery and any other wrong doings such as trespassing, or vandalism. Its secondary purpose would have to be sufficiently collecting the evidence needed to convict the person(s) involved in any crime committed. It’s easy to start planning after you look at the property both as a whole, and in parts.

“When designing a physical security program, the three levels you need to protect are your outer perimeter, your inner perimeter, and your interior.” (1) The outer perimeter is within the property lines, but still outside the building. You want to guide the guests to where they need to be the best you can, that way, it is easier to tell when someone is where they should not be. Besides strategically placed bushes and walkways some other quick fixes to outer perimeter security include setbacks and bollards. The biggest deterrent to criminal activity is the visibility of video cameras on the property outside. (2)

“A building setback…in regards to land development is the distance the building is setback from a street, alley, property line or road.” (3) Setbacks are mostly enforced to keep buildings from being built too close together to prevent any potential fires from spreading. The only other reason I could think to make sure the building has plenty of setbacks is because you would have more control over how you plan to secure it. Plus, an intruder’s sense of risk would certainly go up as they now have more ground to cover before they even reach the actual building. Bollards are columns of various materials that help guide or restrict visitors’ foot or vehicle movements on the property. When placed nearest the road, they are a good buffer between visitors and vehicle accidents. (4)

The inner perimeter includes all the possible entryways into the building; Windows and doors mostly, unless there are some other possible entrances that are big enough for human access. Three different layers of security you can add are: locks and keys, electronic access control systems, and alarm systems. For the more old-fashioned, the locks and keys are a good physical way to keep most people out; just keep track of your keys and of anyone else who has been entrusted with a set. The electronic access control system, scanning/swiping cards for access, is best when the building does not allow regular visitors. Employees can come and go freely while attempting visitors can speak with someone to get a temporary pass, or get assigned an escort that does have a pass, etc. Again, just keep track of who has what access. An alarm system is the most useful at night and could serve as an extra level of protection on any locations in the building that warrant high security.

The interior of the building often requires stricter controls than the exterior. The electronic access control system is again a good idea for keeping people out of places they do not need to be even once they are inside the building. Some employees will have more access than others; keep track of who they are. Criminal activity can occur from within the building as well, so if you have video cameras, they need to be hidden so blind spots cannot be found out easily. (3) In situations requiring heightened security, patrolling security guards are helpful in the building interior as well as the outside perimeter.

Overall, lighting is the best at preventing crime. Most crimes don’t happen during the day, and they certainly are not likely to happen during business hours. I’ve seen shop boutiques down main streets have lights on in the front after closing, grocery stores with their parking lot lights shining all night while also having some lights on in their interiors. I’ve even seen buildings still in the middle of construction, have their lights on in the middle of the night, despite no one being around to use them. Parking decks definitely have lights blazing at all times, but at least some are more energy conscience than others by using motion sensors to increase or decrease the amount of light that is put off at a time. All that being said, you can have all the building security in the world, but bad things will still happen, although perhaps less frequently and bearing lighter consequences than without. Nevertheless, having solid preventative security measures in place makes everyone feel a lot safer in the long run. This way everyone knows that when something does happen, there will at least be some idea of who did it, and they will be served their justice in time.

Proper Storage and Disposal of Cleaning Supplies

If you are like most people, you cannot afford to have someone to clean up after you on a daily basis, leaving some or all of it up to you: to buy, store, use, and dispose of your cleaning supplies. Should be easy, right? Just load everything into a cabinet, closet or a spot in the garage or basement and be done with it all until cleaning time, right? Wrong.

Unless you are a serious ‘green’ cleaner and only use natural products, storing everything together is usually a recipe for disaster. The number one way to avoid that disaster? Keep the disastrous ingredients apart. If you read the labels on your cleaning products to see how to use them, you may have also glanced over something along the lines of, ‘do not store near…’, or, ‘do not store at…’. Read them and you’ll know.

But knowing is half the battle isn’t it? You know what you can and cannot store together and you know to avoid certain conditions when storing them, but not where to store them in your home. Things like the vacuums, mops, and brooms can be thrown into a single closet. The more numerous, smaller and deadlier cleaners are what need a little extra thought put into their placement. Mostly to keep them away from children and pets.

Everyone probably knows children can get into pretty much anything you don’t want them to and some pets are able to jump really high. A lesser known fact is probably how easy it is for some pets to figure out how to open cabinets and doors on their own. The solution? Your cleaning products need to either be somewhere too high to try, or somewhere isolated and locked. Shelves and cabinets are a good go-to. Just make sure the shelves are thick enough and mounted properly to hold a lot of weight and the cabinet has a lock. Putting them somewhere in the basement, garage, or attic is fine too as long as those rooms’ usual temperature doesn’t go against any of the chemicals’ storage directions.

If you want to get really creative, you can add extra shelves, rods, nails, and hooks to help add flexibility to your storage. Whether you do it yourself or trust someone else to do it, again, just make sure it’s strong: you wouldn’t want all your cleaning supplies spilling all over you when you open the door and reach for them. A really good idea I saw for organizing any items in a cabinet was installing a lazy Susan; a rotating plate you can easily spin around to better access your stored items instead of having to dig through them all. Another tip seemed a little much for the average self-cleaner, but if you sometimes trip on air like I do, then it’s worth it: you can use a tiered rolling cart to haul your cleaning supplies all over the house instead of carrying everything in your arms or in a plastic bin you could drop. Trinity Commercial Cleaning uses these tiered carts at many locations. You would still have to carry it up or down stairs (there are caddies with handles that are great for this), but it could save you a few trips if you’re doing some serious cleaning. (1)

Now that everything is safely stored, you can finally clean in peace, knowing when you are done, you can safely store all of your supplies. Well, until your cleaning supplies are running on empty or they expire, anyways. Yes, cleaning supplies, especially chemicals, have a ‘use before…’ date just like many drugs and food products. The best thing to do is to try and use every last drop, unless they are expired. Expired cleaning products can still clean, but they have lost most of their effectiveness. Maybe use the rest up on some light cleaning instead?

Unless the label says otherwise, it is usually safe to dump cleaners in the sink. Most chemical cleaners are still water-based, so if you pour it out, then flush it out with lots of water, it should be fine. Especially if you plan to dump out multiple cleaners. You need lots of flushing in between pouring each cleaner out. For power cleaners, dump it in small doses so it doesn’t clump and still flush lots of water in between. Something you should never, ever mix are products that contain chlorine bleach and products that contain ammonia. It creates a toxic chemical gas that really irritates your senses. Honestly, if I needed to dump cleaners that contained those ingredients, I would do the one, and then the other after a full day of sink use to make sure they have no chance of coming into contact with each other. (2)

Once your cleaners are safely disposed of, read the label to see if it says anything about disposing the container your cleaner came in. Most are recyclable or can be thrown away in the common trash, but if the product is labeled as hazardous, you may not dump the cleaner or dispose of its container normally. When you’re stuck with a hazardous product or container, or it’s non-hazardous but doesn’t tell you if it’s safe to dump or not, your best option is to contact the manufacturer for exact answers. (2)

A third option to safely dispose of your cleaners besides using them up, or dumping them out, is to give them away. Even if they are not brand new, someone might appreciate the chance to try a new cleaning product without having to spend any money on it. It’s a win-win for everybody; they get a ‘free sample’ and you were able to ‘dispose’ of your cleaner in a safe way. Now to restock!

When Elbow Grease Isn't Enough

Most know that no matter how much they scrub and scrape at something, it won’t get any cleaner. That’s why cleaning supplies were invented and have continued to be improved upon over the years, for when elbow grease and water are just not enough. But how to choose? Let’s start with what you are trying to do: clean or disinfect?

Cleaning involves getting rid of all the dirt and grime on surfaces where germs can easily grow, while disinfecting inactivates or even destroys most of the germs present. (1) Cleaning alone is usually enough. It lessens and removes a lot of the unsightly stains, scuffs, smudges and spots we may see, making your home or office not only ‘clean’ but more visually appealing as well. How often you should clean depends on the target object, though how often you actually do so, is up to your own preferences.

As stated above, disinfecting attempts to remove germs, not just their breeding grounds. It is recommended that you regularly disinfect surfaces that come into contact with multiple people. (1) This is especially important when there are people who are, or have fallen, ill that probably came into contact with said surfaces. If children are involved, the need to disinfect is even stronger considering most younger children like to put things in their mouths.

The most popular and accessible cleaner is dish soap. This may be because it tends to be high-foaming and is gentle enough that skin irritation doesn’t happen often. Besides dishes, dish soap has many other convenient uses including: mopping floors (unless they are wood), removing laundry and carpet stains, wiping down various surfaces including appliances, air conditioner filters, and window blinds, clearing glass, degreasing kitchen cabinets, washing patio furniture, grills, concrete slabs, jewelry, and even your body during a shower. (2) To use dish soap for these tasks, some dilution with water is usually required. The best part is, there are many scents and brands to choose from to better fit your lifestyle.

The most popular disinfectant is probably the one that does its job the best, with the least harm to the user; this may be as simple as not having known, harmful chemicals included in its production, or that the user takes the correct precautions when handling the disinfectants. One of those precautions is to never disinfect in a small, enclosed space. You should always have a door or window open to allow any harmful fumes to escape.

Some other factors that may sway your choice to only clean, or only disinfect instead of doing a little of both (or even none at all) include hidden fees and dishonesty. Most people think hot water is always the best choice for cleaning and yes, hot water does usually make it easier and is for the best, but some products actually call for cold water; in those cases, the hot water would only make them ineffective. You may decide to focus on cleaners or disinfectants that use cold water to be more energy efficient because, “cleaning with hot water accounts for 10-15% of your energy bill.” (3)

Many people are aware that there are things in today’s world that are not always good for you. So, it is important to remember that many of our cleaning supplies and household products can indeed hurt us. There can be irritation of the eyes or throat, headaches and other health-related problems, including one of the biggest killers of all, cancer. Some might say, well then, I’ll just be sure to read the labels and ingredient list before I buy. But again, it’s not so simple because it just so happens, “manufacturers are not obligated by U.S. law to list all ingredients in consumer products.” (4)

When you really stop to think about it though, pretty much anything can be toxic to you (sunlight anyone?). It would be nice if the companies creating these products would be a little more honest so that users may, as they say, ‘pick their poison.’. Until then, be sure to do your research before buying a cleaner or disinfectant. At this point you might be wondering, why bother with these decisions at all? Well, our world could always get dirtier and more disease-filled as humans’ actions continue to be left unchecked as many are out of anyone’s control. Cleaners and disinfectants in general may not be your favorite choice, but they may just be you and your family’s best defense against the germs immediately affecting you. And this is because, as said in the opening, sometimes elbow grease isn’t enough.

Dr. William Curtis, a Mooresville native for whom dentistry runs in the family, gave us a chance to speak with him about his experience with Trinity. Enjoy!

BRIAN: Hello, I'm Brian with Trinity Commercial Cleaning and, uh, wanted to take this opportunity to sit down with one of our clients, Dr. Will Curtis, and just ask him what his experiences are about, uh, or with, rather, um, Trinity Commercial Cleaning. And also, to ask him a few things about who he is and what he does. He's one of the few Mooresville natives, so we absolutely want to highlight that and, uh, we'll get right into it, so.

Dr. Curtis, thank you so much-

DR. CURTIS: Sure.

BRIAN: ...for taking time to speak with me.

DR. CURTIS: Happy to do it.

BRIAN: Um, can you just give me a little background about yourself real quick?

DR. CURTIS: Sure, uh, yeah so like you said, I was born and raised here in Mooresville, grew up here. Uh, went off to school, and, um, and always wanted to move back home. So, moved home a couple of years ago and, uh, been a dentist here since then, so.

BRIAN: Great, great. Um, what caused you to want to be a dentist?

DR. CURTIS: Ah, always enjoyed working with people; uh, and working with my hands, and those two things kind of led me down, uh, that path. I've had a family member that was a dentist and talked to him a lot about it and, uh, found it to be something that I enjoyed and felt like I could be good at, so.

BRIAN: Great, great. Yeah, I don't have the hand skills-

DR. CURTIS: Ha!

BRIAN: ...for being a dentist so I guess you guys gotta be pretty steady, eh?

DR. CURTIS: Ha ha, it helps a little bit, to be, yeah, sure.

BRIAN: Great, great. Well, it's so wonderful that you were able to come back, to uh, to Mooresville, and-

DR. CURTIS: Yeah!

BRIAN: ...and serve the people in this area.

DR. CURTIS: Yeah, it's been fun.

BRIAN: So, if you all are looking for a Mooresville native and really wanna, uh, find a phenomenal dentist, I definitely recommend Dr. Curtis for that.

DR. CURTIS: Well thank you.

BRIAN: Um, why is, uh, a clean office so important to you? I know it makes sense, like yeah-

DR. CURTIS: Sure.

BRIAN: ...I wanna have a clean workspace, but what's the importance of that?

DR. CURTIS: Yeah, sure. So, one of the, uh, tough things about my job is no one really knows if a dentist is any good or not and they definitely judge you based on, you know, your facility, uh, if things are clean, if things are well-ordered. Uh, and you can be the best dentist in the world but if your place is a mess, then, uh, people are gonna judge you on that and so I think it's super important to be clean and well-organized and things like that, so.

BRIAN: That's an excellent point. Yeah, I would say perception trumps intention every time, so-

DR. CURTIS: Sure.

BRIAN: ...that's, uh, that's an interesting thing. Um-

DR. CURTIS: Sure.

BRIAN: ...we've heard it said sometimes that we are one of the more expensive cleaning companies in the area, but the reason is is because we truly strive to do what we say we're gonna do-

DR. CURTIS: Mm hm.

BRIAN: ...and, uh, and have employees- really invest in our employees and pay them well above industry standard-

DR. CURTIS: Mm hm.

BRIAN: ...so that they show up every time.

DR. CURTIS: Mm hm.

BRIAN: Uh, just want to ask you your experiences- uh, I think we've been cleaning for you for about a year now or so?

DR. CURTIS: Yeah.

BRIAN: Hard to-

DR. CURTIS: Year and a half, something like that.

BRIAN: Year and a half: wow! Um, have we ever missed a cleaning in that time?

DR. CURTIS: No! Never have. I've come in here late on Sundays and wondered sometimes, but you always came through-

BRIAN: Great.

DR. CURTIS: ...so yeah, never have, no.

BRIAN: I'm glad you said that, that you come in late on Sundays and stuff and wondered about it, because we absolutely pride honesty, so-

DR. CURTIS: Sure.

BRIAN: ...we wanna know if there's things we can work on as well.

DR. CURTIS: Yeah, sure. No, every issue I ever had, we've handled. I think for me, the important thing is that, um, I, and I know you hire, gonna hire quality people, but if something's not right, I know that you're gonna make it right and just have somebody that I can trust, uh, to take care of things when I'm not here and you're here by yourself and that sort of thing is important for me, so.

BRIAN: Sure, sure. Um, do you feel like it's a huge relief that you don't have to add one more thing on your plate by following up with the cleaning company all the time saying, "Why the heck didn't you take this trash out? Why didn't you mop the floors? What's goin' on?"

DR. CURTIS: Yeah!

BRIAN: Um, I know you've had to follow up with us a couple of times, but uh-

DR. CURTIS: Yeah.

BRIAN: Do you feel like on an average we help make your life easier?

DR. CURTIS: Yeah! Absolutely. I mean, you've taken some things off my plate with, uh, restocking things, uh, used to have to get myself, and: um, yeah, and just I don't have to worry about it; it's always done, it's always good, it's, yeah: for sure, absolutely.

BRIAN: Wonderful, wonderful. Um, well is there anything else you'd like to add about, um, Trinity Commercial Cleaning and how we've been able to help you out or anything about-

DR. CURTIS: Yeah.

BRIAN: ...what your vision for your dental practice is-

DR. CURTIS: Ha!

BRIAN: ...and how you can continue to grow?

DR. CURTIS: Yeah, nah, I mean, I would just say, um, it's always done well, it's really important for me to have somebody that I trust. Um, and the quality and somebody I can trust to me are the keys that really make it a good partnership for us, so.

BRIAN: Well, wonderful.

DR. CURTIS: Grateful for ya.

BRIAN: Great! Thank you so much for your time.

Interview with Mr. Jeremy Stewart

BRIAN: I'm Brian with Trinity Commercial Cleaning, and we have an awesome opportunity to sit down with Jeremy with Penske Technology Group, uh, they're a client of ours that we took on about 4 months ago, I believe, and, uh, we just wanted to ask you so far what your experience has been, um, prior to us, what it was like to have cleaning companies come through, and what made you finally make a change and find us as your cleaning company.

JEREMY: So, I'll say, it's been a pleasure working with Trinity. Uh, coming in the door, we've heard a lot of promises from companies trying to sell themselves and, you know, coming from the franchise system that we were using to bring in companies, you know we kind of got away from that decided to try you, and I'll say the best thing has been you've lived up to your promises. You walk in the door, you do what you say you're gonna do; uh, the reaction to anything that's above what you are asked to do on a normal basis, I'll say that you showing up same day to come look at problems we have and looking for solutions has been remarkable, so.

BRIAN: Wonderful. Great, great. What, um, what impact does it have when, um, you've had to take time out of your day to follow up, um, due to issues? What impact has it had personally for you as a manager, and also what impact do you feel like it's had financially for uh, all of your, uh, business?

JEREMY: I'll say that was actually one of the biggest reasons we were looking for a new company was the consistency with the cleaning every week, and as you'll say, we'll walk in the door Monday morning and start doing our day, projects we're supposed to be dealing with and finding things that we're taking care of, and that obviously takes away from our productivity when we're having to either contact the cleaning company and get them back out here, or take care of it ourselves and, obviously, it's just a distraction for everyone, so it affects our day to day. Since Trinity's come in, it's almost like been a forgotten thing that we dealt with. We now move on with our day; we get things done; we're more productive working on, uh, the next race win every week.

BRIAN: Sure.

JEREMY: Yeah.

BRIAN: So what I hear you saying basically is that your skilled labor is allowed to do what they were hired to do versus having to go back and check up on issues.

JEREMY: Yes, correct.

BRIAN: Wonderful. Uh, one final question. I'm gonna put you on the hot seat a little bit and ask: um, you know, one of the things we've discovered is we are more expensive than other cleaning companies in the area. Um, do you feel like we provide more value though? Um, do you feel like you're truly getting what you pay for with our company, or is there something you'd kinda like to see different like that?

JEREMY: I'll say definitely, you know, any business that's going to hire someone to come in and do business looks at the financial side of it. We went down the path of paying less and wanting more and it didn't work. I mean, we did it multiple times. So paying a bit more and getting what we ask has been well worth it and it's been a good decision to go down this path.

BRIAN: Great, great. Well, Jeremy, thank you so much for your time-

Interview with Mr. John Moloney

John Moloney with Penske Technology Group graciously allowed us to pick his brain a bit about the hi-tech facility he is charged with helping to run and the impact cleaning has on his team's success. This interview is worth seeing in it's entirety: there are Easter eggs involved!

BRIAN: Hello, I'm Brian with Trinity Commercial Cleaning. Just wanted to take a few minutes to discuss what our company is like for, um, Penske and John Moloney over here. They've got an incredible facility, and they take a lot of pride in what they do: the workmanship and the products that they run out of here. And also, the visual aspect of their facility; you know, there's chrome around that looks beautiful, and they really take a lot of pride in it, and because of that, they asked us to come on as their cleaning company. So, we just wanted to spend a few minutes and discuss that with you, John. Um, so thank you for taking a moment to sit down with me, and uh, do you want to tell us a little bit about what you all do here, your facility, um, just very briefly uh, broad overview?

JOHN: Yeah, we've been in business for almost 19 years now servicing professional motorsports, so-

BRIAN: Great.

JOHN: ...um, NASCAR, Indycar, sports car teams, race engineers, crew chiefs, drivers are coming through our facilities. We do a lot of work with OEM customers. Uh, major OEM automotive customers come in as well, so, we've always strived for our facilities to, from the minute you hit the front door walking in the door, uh, going throughout the facility, bathroom, whatever: we're striving for the Ritz-Carlton experience here versus a lower Motel 6 kind of experience and-

BRIAN: Sure, sure.

JOHN: ...I don't want to be throwing any brands under the bus, but when our race engineers, crew chiefs, people come in, they've been traveling all over the country. They want a nice, clean facility, and I think it sort of sets the tone; from the minute you walked in, you can pretty much- at least, I do it when I go into a restaurant- within the first 60 seconds of me being in there and looking around and looking at the people and looking at the facility, I can pretty much tell, like, what's going on there, so that's where the cleaning services here are of paramount importance.

It's a morale issue: if our people don't feel like the cleaning crew is a true partner of ours- is running at the same pace- we use a term here: "Racing toward Perfection," R, P with the iconic number 2- if they're not doing it as the rest of us, then it's sort of a bit demoralizing at times: you walk in, you see the place isn't clean, isn't tidy, so very critical partner in our success is Trinity cleaning services. The people, they come in here to do this work: a lot of times it's after hours, it's at night, it's on the weekends. The work they're doing then is just as critical as any other work that we do around here, so.

BRIAN: Wonderful. Um, that really raises, uh, a very important question that I've been hearing over and over is, uh, you all, from what I heard just now, want more than just a cleaning company. I mean, anyone can show up with a vacuum or a mop bucket and clean, but you want more than that. You want professionalism; you want people in your facility that you can absolutely trust to know that hey, I'm at home at night with my family and I don't have to worry about what they're doing. I know they're coming in and they're incredible people that are just doing their job. Um, and then also on Monday morning when you come back, you don't have to follow up with them and, so, can you talk a little bit about what your past experiences were with cleaning companies and then, uh, afterwards kind of discuss a little bit about how we've helped solve that pain and frustration?

JOHN: Yeah, um, we've had our challenges over the years during that 19 year span of business, uh, the good, the bad, and the ugly of cleaning crews. We've had some good cleaning crews come in-

BRIAN: Sure.

JOHN: ...that have worked hard and hustled, um, but I would say it's a struggle at times... The proverbial situation is the owner/franchisee coming in and telling us they're gonna do this and that, they walk out the door, we never see 'em again. Continuity is an issue, people changing every 3 or 6 months, and, you know, we expressed that to Brian and Trinity cleaning coming in here: we're very hypersensitive to that and we're gonna be looking for that and usually we can pick up on it pretty quick now if, uh, if people aren't doing what they say they're going to do. Thus far, the relationship's been very good. Um, I think Trinity's done an excellent job of number one, doing what they said they were going to do, maintaining the continuity, the people, the background checks. We have a highly confidential business here working with different automotive OEMs, aerospace companies: whoever it is. Confidentiality is a big, uh, situation for us, so we can't, when we say there can't be any pictures, when we say there can't be any of these things going on, um, you know, we need people to understand that when they sign the confidentiality/non-disclosure agreements, we need them to know and understand what they're signing. Um, yeah, and we all do look when we walk in the Monday morning or it might be over the weekend that we're in working; we are looking around at the chrome trim, we're looking around at all the different, the floors, the glass: did they do what they said they were going to do? And Trinity has been doing a really great job for us, and it's been a pleasure, it's been a relief for us to know that, um, you know, they're doing what they said they were gonna do.

BRIAN: Great, great. Well, uh, one final question, you know, us guys, we don't like to talk about feelings very much, but, I do wanna ask, like Monday morning, how did it make you feel in the past when you would come in and things weren't done that you paid to have done? How did that make you feel? And then now, what's the difference like for you to walk in on the weekend or Monday morning and just see it's done so you can go do what you need to be doing?

JOHN: Yeah, it would be highly frustrating, demoralizing at times, um, a lot of people assume that you left Friday afternoon but sometimes people were working through the weekend here and then come in on a Monday morning and still see things were not- the trash wasn't taken out or something, whatever wasn't- all the various lists of items, very frustrating, it just, kinda takes the wind out of your sail. You've got a whole week ahead of you of hard work to do around here. Um, if it's been done, it's nice and clean on Friday, it puts a spring in your step, gives you an uplifting feeling there, so it's a big part of it, and the mental aspect uh, is a big part around here, the psychology of people doing a good job, having a good attitude, um, the cleaning is a huge part of that.

The other thing with the Monday morning aspect that was really cool with Trinity was just, uh, it was after somewhere during the Easter week, I don't remember specifically when it was, but when the cleaning service occurred, the next morning we came in and there a note on the door and Trinity had put Easter eggs like it was an Easter egg hunt. And it was just kind of, again, it's just breaking up the monotony. A lot of these hard-working guys are tired, they're worn out and then all of a sudden like, "What? An Easter egg hunt??" I still have one of the little blue Easter eggs in my office there that, you know, just reminds me, 'cause we're all the time trying to break up the monotony, some change of scenery, and that to me really told me a lot about Trinity, that they're going beyond just coming in and checking off the boxes, that they had enough to think a bit further ahead to trying to break up the monotony here and trying to make it something special. And it did, you know, I mean the guys were all kind of laughing and carrying on about this, and they were going around finding the Easter eggs and finding their bits of chocolate and whatever else was in there, but it was a really nice gesture and told me a lot, in that one single act, told me a lot about Trinity, the company and the people and what they stand for.

BRIAN: Great. I'm so glad you brought that up because we, um, we keep saying over and over that we're trying to change the industry. You know, the cleaning industry is like, something that's done at night that you never see or hear about, and it's like, you know, yes there's people involved, but we don't think about those people, and so we wanna show that, "Hey, we absolutely are professionals, but we like to have fun, too: that's one of our core values." So, you know, the Easter egg hunt, that was one part of it to say "Hey, you know, we wanna have fun with you all," so thank you for bringing that up.

MRS. JEAN: Certainly.

BRIAN: ...can talk about your experience with us.

So, I just want to introduce someone who is very near and dear to my heart, Mrs. Jean Benfield over at Gaylor Electric in Mooresville. So, I also want to say if you all have any electrical needs...

MRS. JEAN: Absolutely.

BRIAN: ...definitely come talk to Gaylor Electric.

MRS. JEAN: Absolutely.

BRIAN: Mrs. Jean, first off, thank you so much, and, um, and second off, do you mind taking a few minutes and just kinda talking 'bout what your experience with, uh, cleaning companies prior to Trinity Commercial Cleaning?

MRS. JEAN: Certainly, certainly. We, uh, sort of a long road which you and I talked about in the past. Finding someone that, um, we could depend on, um, that we could really tell you'd been here and cleaned, you know. You come in over the weekends for us, and, um, make it very convenient for us, you do a great job, you're dependable, it's just been, uh, a big headache removed from my weekly duties since you folks have started, uh, working with us and we do appreciate you and recommend you to anyone that is looking, uh, for someone to do a great job for them.

BRIAN: Wonderful. Um, one of the things I'm learning is that in the cleaning industry, um, anybody can show up with a vacuum and a mop bucket and say they're a cleaning company, but that's not really what you all were after. Yeah, anybody can show up to clean, but you, you were more after professionalism, consistency, um, people that you know you could trust, uh-

MRS. JEAN: Depend on, yes.

BRIAN: ...and depend on, yes, and um, and so we've definitely tried to provide that for you all.

MRS. JEAN: And you have: you made a huge difference for us. Thank you.

BRIAN: Wonderful. So, I think we've been cleaning for you all for- man, it might be going on 2 years, a year and a half?

MRS. JEAN: I...

BRIAN: I don't know.

MRS. JEAN: At least, yes.

BRIAN: It's been a while.

MRS. JEAN: Mm hm.

BRIAN: Um, and do you feel it's been that same consistent result all the way through?

MRS. JEAN: Yeah, I do. It's been consistent, and that's a real pleasure, 'cause I'm always conscious of, um, yeah, come in Mondays, I look around, just in that habit, and I can certainly tell you've been here, where in the past, I could tell they had not.

BRIAN: Sure. So, I want to ask real quick 'cause this is something that's very near and dear to a lot of people's heart, is, um, like you just said, you come in on Monday morning and then see if it was done or not done, and people know. Like, you, you're in this office all the time: you know what it looks like-

MRS. JEAN: Mm hm.

BRIAN: ...when it's been cleaned. And it's obvious. Um, but how did that make you feel when you would come in on Mondays and you paid for-

MRS. JEAN: Mm hm.

BRIAN: ...this service to happen-

MRS. JEAN: Mm hm.

BRIAN: ...and it wasn't done? Like, what was that like?

MRS. JEAN: It was very frustrating. You know, I would call the folks who were doing it then and, um, let them know that we were having needs that were not met. I could take, uh, back in our work area in the back, um, I could take a paper towel and run it along the surface there and I would take a picture, literally, and send it to the cleaning folks and show them that it had not been cleaned. Uh, picture of, um, the microwave that on Monday morning was still dirty. So we were not getting the service that we needed.

BRIAN: And you are so busy, I mean, you run almost everything around here, um, and so that had to have been really frustrating to take time out of your day of things like Monday I think you in-process employees so you don't have time-

MRS. JEAN: That's right, do the orientation for all the new hires-

BRIAN: Sure.

MRS. JEAN: ...the best day of the week for me because I am always happy to bring new folks on board-

BRIAN: Sure.

MRS. JEAN: But, you know I didn't want my co-workers, my friends to go back to heat something up in that microwave, um, and it be dirty from the week before, you know? And that was a waste of Gaylor's money as well.

BRIAN: Sure, sure. So, Mrs. Jean, um, is there anything else you would like to add about Trinity and how we can continue to help you or anything that we also may need to improve on as well because one of our core values is "be honest" and so we want people to know what they're getting. So, if there's something that you might want to speak about that we could improve on, then please don't hesitate to let us know.

MRS. JEAN: Uh, well, I'll just say that I'm very-

BRIAN: Sure.

MRS. JEAN: ...happy with all that you've done. I, uh, feel confident in, um, knowing that you'll keep everything safe and up-to-date and, um, you do everything that we've talked about.

BRIAN: Great.

A very merry Easter season to all of our readers, clients, vendors, and employees!

This year, as part of our company culture, in particular our core value "have fun," we hosted an Easter Egg Hunt at each of our client's offices! We got some great feedback and photos from many of our friends. Our gratitude for having the opportunity to serve and surprise such fun-embracing clients is without measure.
